AMD Trinity APU overclocked at 7.3 GHz, kept cool with liquid nitrogen

AMD Trinity APU overclocked at 7.3 GHz, kept cool with liquid nitrogen

AMD's Trinity APUs have only been in the wild for a few days, but some have already taken on the challenge of pushing the new desktop silicon to its limits. By giving the A10-5800K model 1.956 volts, disabling two of its cores and cooling it with liquid nitrogen, overclockers were able to push the chip to 7.3GHz. Air-cooling and 1.616 volts squeezed out 5.1GHz without sacrificing any cores. If you're a mere mortal who's fresh out of liquid nitrogen (or never had any to begin with), you should be able to comfortably bump CPU performance by roughly 10 percent and GPU speeds by 15 to 17 percent.

Dish Gives Up Turning Blockbuster into Netflix Rival

It was April 2011 when Dish Network acquired the struggling video-rental company Blockbuster in an effort to position the brand as a worthy competitor of Netflix. Eighteen months have passed and the new owner has given up. In an interview with Bloomberg, Dish Network founder and CEO Charlie Ergen confirmed what has long been rumored: the company is abandoning its current efforts in making Blockbuster into a Netflix rival.

Mazda Makes a Marvelous Mid-Sizer. It's well known that Mazda is working through some corporate challenges at the moment, but the company's second-half news has been, in general, far better than the headlines from the first half. Global sales are up 12 percent, the CX-5 has sold 200,000 units worldwide and U.S. dealers are begging for more inventory.

Snapseed for Android hinted at in Google+ post by Vic Gundotra

When Google announced that they would be acquiring Nik Software, developer of popular photography software and apps such as Snapseed, we're sure that many iOS users panicked for a moment as they were worried that Google might put an end to Snapseed for iOS and make it an Android exclusive. Google of course reassured users that nothing of that sort will happen, and as far as Android users are concerned, it seems that Snapseed could be headed your way. While it was not mentioned explicitly, a recent photo uploaded by Google's Senior Engineering VP, Vic Gundotra, has suggested that Snapseed for Android could be in the works.

Motorola Droid RAZR HD screen protectors arrive at Verizon's store, launch imminent?

A few days ago we reported that according to the rumors, it seems that the Motorola Droid RAZR HD and the RAZR MAXX HD for Verizon were delayed due to antenna problems. Unfortunately no timeframe was given for when we might be able to expect the phones, but thanks to the photo above, it seems that screen protectors for the Droid RAZR HD have begun to arrive at Verizon stores. While this does not confirm anything, it sure seems like a sign that the phone could be arriving soon. After all, why would Verizon bother stocking accessories for the product if it won't be available for the next few months, right.

Parrot unveils Asteroid Smart, Tablet and Mini car infotainment systems, we go hands-on

We first laid eyes on Parrot's first Android-based Asteroid car infotainment system a couple years ago at CES. Then, at this past year's show, we got a sneak peek at a trio of successor Asteroid devices. Now, a mere 10 months later, the Asteroid Smart, Tablet and Mini have finally arrived in consumer-ready garb. First, there's a flagship in-dash system, the double-DIN Asteroid Smart. It features a 6.2-inch 800 x 480 capacitive display, a Texas Instruments 800MHz processor and runs a heavily skinned version of Android 2.3.

Google reportedly wants to replicate the Nexus 7 in smartphone form

. Given that Google's (GOOG) own Nexus 7 has proven to be one of the most successful Android tablets yet released, it's not surprising that Google would want to replicate that success in its own line of Nexus-branded smartphones. Unnamed sources have told DigiTimes that Google is working with several manufacturers “to launch smartphones based on its Nexus 7 platform” sometime in the future.

Production of Razer's ‘Project Fiona' gaming tablet hinges on Facebook engagement

. One of the craziest tablets to come out of this year's CES was Razer's ”Project Fiona” tablet. The gaming company's CEO Min-Liang Tan said he wanted to build a completely different sort of tablet - one that was the complete opposite of an iPad or Android tablet. Much like the Wikipad, the Fiona tablet concept had dual-analogs, and enough buttons to satisfy any console gamer. Where Fiona differed was its ability to play full-fledged PC games such as Skyrim and World of Warcraft natively, whereas Wikipad can only play PC games streamed from the cloud.

Panasonic's 75mm-thick, 100-lumen laser projector module claims world's thinnest title

While scanning through Panasonic's booth at CEATEC 2012, we couldn't help but notice a prototype of its world's slimmest 100-lumen laser projector module (or OIU aka optical imaging unit, as the company prefers), which can beam out an 800 x 480 picture. It's not clear when exactly we'll see this 75mm-thick device getting into consumers' hands, but there's certainly room for improvement for the image quality. Likewise, the scan-type OIU (resolution at about 400 x 300) next to the slim projector is far from ready for mass consumption, as the company is hoping to actually shrink it down and integrate it into mobile phones.

With the MetroPCS merger, T-Mobile firmly embraces the ‘bargain basement' label

. When thinking about Deutsche Telekom's most recent attempts to merge T-Mobile with other carriers, consider the following three points. First, AT&T's (T) average revenue per user is $65, while MetroPCS's (PCS) ARPU is $41. T-Mobile has now pivoted from trying to merge with the highest-ARPU mobile operator in America to merging with the lowest-ARPU mobile operator in America. This is profoundly weird. The strategic objectives of these two merger attempts are perfect opposites. AT&T's ARPU is so high it's $9 above Verizon (VZ). T-Mobile switched from courting Kate Middleton to hooking up with Khloe Kardashian.

Is Samsung working on its own mobile browser?

Samsung's Android customers get their pick of a pretty broad selection of smartphone web browsers and soon, at least according to ETNews, Samsung is looking to follow up on its own Android UI additions with its own fully-fledged mobile browser. The company is reportedly seeking out WebKit engineers to work on the project at Samsung's Silicon Valley R&D center - where work is already underway on the Chrome mobile rival. The open-source WebKit engine already underpins not only Google's own browser, but also its pre-ICS Android web browser - and Apple's Safari.

Naro-Tartaruga robot sea turtle

Naro-Tartaruga robot sea turtle

It seems that many aspects of life are being shaped or influenced by the world of robotics, and this time around, we have a sea turtle-inspired robot known as the Naro-Tartaruga, which is the brainchild of researchers at ETH-Zurich. One of the reasons the Naro-Tartaruga is based on the sea turtle would be due to the creatures' rigid bodies which are technically easier to copy compared to that of fish. Apart from that, with a relatively generous torso, there is more than ample space to pack on an adequate supply of sensor and batteries so that the life of an autonomous robot turtle is very possible.

Huawei Ascend P1 LTE set for North America debut

Another day, another smartphone hits the FCC, where this time around it would be the Huawei Ascend P1 LTE that has undergone testing over by the folks over at the FCC. This spanking new FCC filing does seem towards North America as the destination of choice, where a particular version of the Huawei Ascend P1 LTE has been cleared, where we know that it will come with the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system in tow, not to mention AT&T-friendly 700MHz LTE frequencies. Throw in AWS support and you can also introduce it to LTE providers in Canada alongside future T-Mobile, or should we say MetroPCS, deployments.
