YouTube streaming Lollapalooza festival for those of us who can't be in Chicago

YouTube is plenty busy with a livestream of the Olympics in HD for Asian and African audiences, but it's keeping tabs on the scene in the states, too. The service is running a free, two-channel webcast of Chicago's Lollapalooza music festival this weekend, which features big-name acts such as Jack White, The Black Keys and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. As you may recall, YouTube also offered a live broadcast of the event last year. Click through to the source link to see who's on stage.

WALL-E robot brought to life

WALL-E robot brought to life

We've watched the computer-animated science fiction film WALL-E in 2008 that was produced by Pixar Animation Studios. And boy, I still have wonderful memories of the humble WALL-E robot. But my adoration for the character is nothing compared to Mike Senna, a robot enthusiast from California. Unknown to many, Mike was able to create a life-sized version of the robot. Mike says that the had to watch the movie over and over again to get the details right.

Finally, after spending 25 hours a week on the project, his own WALL-E robot was finished.

NEV deal to buy Saab delayed

NEV deal to buy Saab delayed

Remember a month and a half ago when we told you that Saab will "soldier on?" Well, we should have written "stand at attention.". According to SaabsUnited, the deal for National Electric Vehicle Sweden to buy the remaining Saab assets didn't close on schedule. In fact, it's been delayed by "a month, perhaps more." NEVS also seems to have indicated that it's not going to be answering any more questions about the deal until it's completed.
NEVS is supposedly planning on building electric cars based on the design that would have been the next-generation 9-3.

Cellphone stresses you out in four ways, research says

Technology is a two edged sword. And a study done by the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project attempts to prove that. According to the Washington-based think tank organization, in spite of the benefits of mobile technology, cellphone users are most likely facing four problems that are causing stress in our day to day lives. The center says that 88 percent of American adults have cellphones.
Out of those users, the research revealed that 72 percent of owners are experiencing dropped calls occasionally, with roughly 32 percent of them experiencing the problem at least a few times a week.

Archos ChildPad finally goes capacitive, joins us in the 21st century

The ChildPad made by Archos and branded Arnova (that's the French company's even lower cost brand) finally received a capacitive touchscreen. The resistive touchscreen employed so far was one of the only big letdowns concerning Archos' first children-focused tablet. But now that's gone, and the ChildPad is even more interesting than before. Especially because this screen tech swap only made it more expensive by $10.
So the ChildPad can now be yours for $139.99. For that amount of dough you get a 7-inch 800×480 touchscreen, a 1 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM, 4 GB of built-in storage space, a microSD slot, a front camera, and Wi-Fi.

Boeing, SpaceX reportedly win NASA 'space taxi' funding race

NASA has reportedly picked Boeing and SpaceX as the two companies to receive primary funding for the "Commercial Crew Program." The news was reportedly leaked to NBC News' Jay Barbree, but all parties involved have refused to comment until NASA makes the official announcement later today. While Boeing and SpaceX are likely to take home the bulk of $1 billion in funding, Sierra Nevada has been picked as the "standby" candidate - with a mandate to step in if either primary partner fails.

Microsoft patent applications take Kinect into mobile cameras, movie-making

Microsoft has never been shy about its ambitions for Kinect's depth sensing abilities. A pair of patent applications, however, show that its hopes and dreams are taking a more Hollywood turn. One patent has the depth camera going portable: a “mobile environment sensor” determines its trajectory through a room and generates a depth map as it goes, whether it's using a Kinect-style infrared sensor or stereoscopic cameras. If the visual mapping isn't enough, the would-be camera relies on a motion sensor like an accelerometer to better judge its position as it's jostled around.

Apple seeks patent for Smart Cover with embedded secondary display

According to a patent application made public by the USPTO this morning (and originally filed a year ago), Apple believes it's possible to build a flexible display into an iPad cover in order to “greatly enhance” the functionality of the tablet itself. Taking power and data from a dedicated connector on the side of the slate, at least one segment of the name-deserving Smart Cover could be used to augment the main display with space for extra icons, or operate as a separate media control interface, or simply display notifications.

Taco Bell employee pees on order and posts photo online

If there are two fast food joints that people might be avoiding in the near future, it would definitely be Burger King and Taco Bell. Cameron Jankowski, a worker over at Taco Bell, was alleged to have posted a photo of himself peeing on a Taco Bell order, tweeting his “exploits” afterwards. Thanks to hacktivist collective group Anonymous, they tweeted a link to a YouTube video which purportedly showed off Janowski's personal details, who was subsequently identified to be working at a Taco Bell restaurant in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

. AT&T (T) bolstered its spectrum portfolio Thursday when it agreed to pay $650 million in cash to acquire wireless spectrum holding company NextWave Wireless. The vast majority of that sum - $600 million - will go toward retiring the company's debts. In return, AT&T will get access to Wireless Communications Service (WCS) spectrum on the 2.3GHz band, as well as some Advanced Wireless Service (AWS) spectrum that spans from 2110MHz to 2155 MHz on the downlink and from 1710MHz to 1755MHz on the uplink.

Honeywell next up to get a patent license from Microsoft, goes the Android handheld route

Stop us if you've heard this one before: a company that wants to start using (or keep using) a Google OS strikes a patent licensing deal with Microsoft to avoid the legal barrage that will invariably follow if it says no. It's Honeywell singing the tune this time, and the company has reached an agreement that will let it use Android or Chrome OS on devices like a new edition of the Dolphin 7800 rugged handheld (shown here) without perpetually looking over its shoulder. Neither side is going into the specifics, although Microsoft has steered Honeywell into using its boilerplate copy about royalties trading hands.

Updated Verizon Galaxy Nexus Jelly Bean binaries added to AOSP

CDMA variants are, invariably, the redheaded stepchildren of the Nexus line. That is to say, those units nearly always trail behind their GSM counterparts where updates and official support are concerned. But it appears Google's picking up the pace, having just released the latest Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean (JRO03H) binaries for Verizon-branded handsets three weeks after welcoming Toro devices back into AOSP. What does this mean for the average user. Not much, since there's no real way to gauge whether or not this signals an imminent carrier-sanctioned OTA rollout, although it does bode well for those prospects.

Embracing geotagging: how to journal your trips (and contribute to Google Earth) with snapshots

Geotagging. It's not exactly a long, lost art, but it's certainly not something most folks bother to do after a trip. Avid travelers, hikers and the general outdoorsy crowd have been embracing the feature for years, though, and it's actually seeping into the mainstream without most individuals even noticing. How so. Smartphones. Given the proliferation of iPhones, Android handsets and Windows Phone devices making their way onto the market - coupled with the explosive use of geo-minded social networks like Path, Instagram and Foursquare - an entire generation is now growing up in a geotagged world.

That figure represents a 27.5-percent improvement over the previous year. Not counting HD trucks, .8 percent of vehicles sold in the States are diesel cars; including pickups brings that number up to three percent.
