Survey: 66% believe drivers rely too much on technology

According to a new study released by MetLife, around 66 percent of those surveyed believe that drivers rely too heavily on technology while behind the wheel, and that reliance may contribute to unsafe driving. MetLife also found that drivers are more familiar with convenience tech than safety-oriented advancements. Of those polled, 85 percent believe that cars are safer today than they used to be, and a whopping 90 percent are either very or somewhat familiar with GPS devices that can take attention from the road.

Dish Network, Blockbuster unveil Blockbuster Movie Pass all-inclusive entertainment service

At its "a stream come true" event today, Dish Network finally revealed its plans for a subscription video service called Blockbuster Movie Pass, due to launch October 1st. That includes access to discs (movies and games) by mail, streaming video to the TV and PC, and linear TV service from Dish, all in one package. Blockbuster Movie Pass is clearly being pitched a Netflix / Qwikster competitor, however it's currently only available to Dish Network subscribers for $10 / month. That tie to pay-TV makes it a TV Everywhere play pulling Dish's various properties under one umbrella, but doesn't significantly shift the online video landscape.

Epic trike racing makes us go gaga

Epic trike racing makes us go gaga

Our history with the tricycle is somewhat spotty. The inherently unbalanced design is only associated with skinned knees and brushes with asphalt in our memories, but apparently not everyone had the same experience. A trio of daredevils have taken to slinging themselves down mountain passes on modified big-boy trikes with nothing but the soles of their shoes for deceleration. Judging by the footage after the jump, the crew can crest speeds of 55 miles per hour, blowing by traffic and generally abandoning all regard for their well-being in the process.

Casio G'zOne Commando $.01 at Amazon

The Casio G’zOne Commando isn’t a bad phone if you need something that won’t break the moment you breath on it. Amazon has the device on sale for a penny. While it’s not a huge drop for $20, it’s still next to nothing to walk away with it. We reviewed the device when it first came out. Kevin said the Android experience was modest, but usable. Casio’s custom user interface was actually cool in some aspects. And while the phone is about as ugly as the device’s name, its industrial design won’t phase those who actually need this.

Scientists reconstruct images from our brains, plan to do the same for dreams (video)

This is your brain. And now this is your brain on YouTube. By using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) software, researchers at UC Berkeley created a visual representation of what our brains see when we watch a TV or movie. It works as such: scientists show subjects random clips and measure the corresponding cerebral activity. After the computer "learns" what vids evoke what brain activity, scientists feed 18 million seconds of random YouTube videos into the computer program where it reconstructs a movie representation of neural happenings based on the hundred clips most similar to what it sees.

Clearwire courting AT&T and Verizon in bid to raise cash for 4G LTE network

Clearwire is in discussions to sell sell some of its wireless network capacity to Verizon Wireless and AT&T, Bloomberg reported recently. “All those discussions are under way," Clearwire CEO Erik Prusch told Bloomberg. "I'm confident we'll bring in new wholesale partners. Our message to the industry is that we've got the capacity to handle their needs.” However, it is more likely Clearwire is approaching the carriers in an effort to raise cash for its 4G LTE network plans.

Verizon's Motorola Droid Bionic now just $149.99, Droid X2 almost free at Amazon

After many months of leaks, rumors, and speculation surrounding it, the Motorola Droid Bionic for Verizon was finally made available earlier this month, although it didn't come cheap. If you got it from Big Red itself you had (and still do) to pay no less than $299.99, even if you chose to sign a new two-year contract. However, Amazon sweetened the deal a little bit by offering the Droid Bionic for $100 less – but if that still wasn't cheap enough for you, read on. See, Amazon has decided to make the Droid Bionic even more affordable. So it's now offering the superphone for just $149.99.

728-hp Toyota Camry is the ultimate sleeper

728-hp Toyota Camry is the ultimate sleeper

A sleeper is any vehicle that appears to be slow, but is hiding an evil secret in its engine bay. Sleepers are scintillating machines that prove time and skill (and money) can turn a garden variety family sedan or station wagon into a street rocket ready to tackle those with far more cash to burn. Take this Toyota Camry, for example – it just received a new lease on life courtesy of Canadian tuner Dynamotorsports. Under the hood sits a 3.0-liter V6 engine fitted with custom intake and exhaust manifolds, a big ol' HKS turbo and a whole lot of boost.

Latest Chevy Volt ads remind us that this car swings both ways

General Motors' latest pair of Chevrolet Volt commercials reiterate the plug-in's ability to switch between electric-only operation and "range-extended" mode – because people apparently still don't get that – by focusing on one fictional Volt owner's unexpected gas station stop. The clips center on a Volt owner who swings by a gas station for a potty break, but instead of simply stepping out of his plug-in ride and making a mad dash for the bathroom, the Volt owner is stopped by a man and his son who question the Volt's appearance at such an establishment. Ain't that the way.

Samsung Plans to Stop Apple By Being More Aggressive

Samsung Plans to Stop Apple By Being More Aggressive

This patent war has been going for a very long time now and Samsung has seemingly had enough of it. After Apple was granted minor victories in a few different countries, Samsung's vowed to be more aggressive in their efforts to run their business peacefully. Up until recently, Samsung has only retaliated to Apple's lawsuits. That's over, according to Samsung's Lee Younghee. Instead of waiting for Apple to attack and trying to defend themselves, they'll become the attackers.

Horn Bike: iPhone Speaker and Bike Mount Combined

Horn Bike: iPhone Speaker and Bike Mount Combined

Bone. Horn. Ride. The jokes write themselves.
This is the Horn Bike iPhone case from Bone, and you can probably guess from the name exactly what it does. Your iPhone 4 slides into the silicone sleeve and a Velcro strap secures it to the handlebars of your bike. So far, so ordinary.

The neatness comes from the ‘horn' part, which is in fact a horn speaker that channels the sound from the iPhone's speaker forwards and at the same time stretches it out, making it up to 13dB louder.

We can clearly see the more stylized nose, complete with its swept front fascia and broad three-bar grille.

Here's another camera for your espionage games or nanny surveillance.  This HC-GUM Covert Gum Stick Camera/DVR from Smarthome looks like an old-style pack of Wrigley's Spearmint gum – if you don't look too closely.  (They have the look right, but for some reason it's marked with “Dangerous Material” and described as a lighter.)  It takes still shots with a resolution up to 1280 x 960 and video up to a 720 x 480 resolution on a miniSD card (up to 16GB, not included).  The camera has an internal 300mAh battery that recharges via USB and gives you up to 90 minutes of recording time.

Massachusetts Attorney General to demand answers from Apple after iTunes breach

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley recently said her iTunes account was compromised by identity thieves and that she will press Apple for answers. It is unclear how the thieves gained access to Coakley's account, perhaps through an application, but the hackers stole credit card information and made fraudulent purchases, ThreatPost said. Coakley brought up the attack during a speech for the launch of the Massachusetts Advanced Cyber Security Center. She noted that Dell blocked her credit card when the hackers tried to purchase a computer, believing the purchase to be fraudulent. Apple, however, did not.

Awesome: Real-Life Electric Tron Lightcycle

What could possibly be cooler than this street-legal, 100mph Tron lightcycle. Custom chopper builders Parker Brothers have managed to pull the Tron lightcycle out of its CGI home and into the real world. The amazing build is 100% electric, and can hit 100mph. It even has the glowing blue lights of the original, but sadly can't turn 90-degrees instantaneously like the “real” thing.

The bike runs on li-ion batteries which keep it running for an hour and recharge in just 35 minutes.

Storage enthusiasts (yeah, there is such a thing - what of it?) would probably tell you that PCIe-based SSDs are a dime a dozen these days. But in all seriousness, the prices we're seeing are proof that a few more competitors wouldn't hurt. A few weeks back, Austria's own Angelbird started to ship a solution that we first heard about during 2010, and we were fortunate enough to pop a Wings PCIe SSD RAID card into our Mac Pro for testing. For years, we've been booting this up and running every single application off of its stock HDD - a 640GB Hitachi HDE721064SLA360 (7200RPM) - as we surmise many of you desktop owners might be.

Toyota coupe range expanding with Supra successor, CT200h coupe, LFA Tokyo edition

Toyota was once an automaker known for its two-door sportscars and coupes. There was the Celica. There was the Supra. There was the Lexus SC. But while those have all long since departed, the Japanese auto giant is clawing its way back to the territory it once owned.
The Lexus LFA is one heck of a first salvo, and the FT-86 is around the corner.

Mystery super Lexus LS spotting lapping Nürburgring

Mystery super Lexus LS spotting lapping Nürburgring

We spy, with the lens of our spy guy, a rather unique Lexus LS that's taken to the track. Spotted lapping Germany's Nürburgring, this particular LS is wearing puffed-out fenders, a strongly styled decklid spoiler, what appears to be a faux nose hiding new bodywork, deep side skirts and a pair of vents on the hood. Something sporty is afoot, and we're itching to know more. Toyota is clearly testing a super sporty version of its flagship luxury sedan. What's not clear, however, is what exactly is going on underneath the bodywork.

Motorola's Atrix 2 (Edison) flaunts qHD display, hands-on reveals no PenTile matrix

It seems that Motorola's successor to the original Atrix has emerged in the streets of Chicago prior to being officially unveiled by AT&T. The crew at The Verge recently scored some hands-on time with the device, and in the process, cleared up much of the speculation regarding Ma Bell's upcoming Atrix 2 - also known as the Edison. First, we know the device will indeed have a qHD display, although unlike Moto's other 960 x 540 screens, this one discards the PenTile matrix and features properly proportioned sub-pixels, which delivers crisper text in the process.
