With FCC approval, SoftBank free to complete merger with Sprint

With FCC approval, SoftBank free to complete merger with Sprint

On Wednesday the FCC gave the go-ahead for Japan's SoftBank to complete a deal that will see the company merge with Sprint. Worth $21.6 billion, the deal will bring in new stream of cash for the third-ranked US carrier as the company continues to expand its high-speed cellular network. Unlike other major telecom deals (AT&T's attempt to buy T-Mobile comes to mind), there was little reason to believe the FCC would block the acquisition. To round things out, the FCC has also approved the Sprint buyout of Clearwire, which means that company will now fall under SoftBank's chain of command as well.

Samsung's Q2 profits beat record, miss expectations

Samsung's Q2 profits beat record, miss expectations

Samsung has released its Q2 financial guidance and the profits of the market leaders are projected to be $8.33 billion, a new record and an impressive $3 billion improvement over the same quarter last year. As, one can expect, the strong sales of the company's flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S4 and its Galaxy S series along with its Note lineup have contributed the most to the record numbers. However, despite the growth the numbers posted are slightly lower than market analysts expected.

Xbox One Reputation System Groups Like-Minded Gamers Together

Xbox One Reputation System Groups Like-Minded Gamers Together

You know what they say – birds of a feather will flock together, and the same can be said of gamers. After all, behind that digital facade too, is a human (although from time to time, there are bots used by cheaters), and humans tend to live an isolated life but for a while before they realize that no (wo)man is an island. The Xbox One reputation system will punish frequently reported players, but contributors (a nice word for those who love telling tales) will be rewarded by gaining a jump in their Reputation score.

George Zimmerman Trial Victim Of Skype Bombing [Video]

We think it's safe to say the majority of the U.S. is paying close attention to the George Zimmerman trial, although some might be paying closer attention than others as the trial came to a halt when one of the trial's witnesses testified via Skype. It wasn't due to any sort of connection problem or due to the witness wearing anything that wasn't suitable for a court of law, but instead, a number of people decided to bombard the witness with Skype calls while he attempts to give his testimony.

Just yesterday we reported that Motorola was going to run an ad today regarding its upcoming Moto X smartphone. There's a patriotic element to that ad as Motorola tells everyone that its latest smartphone is designed, engineered and built in the U.S. The ad also offered a subtle hint regarding something which has long been rumored. It is expected that customers will be able to customize their own Moto X, the extent of customization is not known.

20 Million Samsung Galaxy S4 Units Sold Globally

Back in May it was reported that Samsung had hopes to ship about 10 million units by the end of the month, and now that we're in July, it looks like Samsung has managed to do that. According to the reports, word on the street has it that Samsung has since managed to sell 20 million Galaxy S4 units through global channels. This is not an official claim although apparently Samsung's own CEO has confirmed this to reporters, so we expect that Samsung will be releasing a press release soon. It should be noted that units shipped and units sold are very different things.

Moto X Smartphone's First Patriotic Ad Hints At Customization Option

We've covered the Motorola X Phone in great detail here, initially it was believed that this was going to be a whole range of devices, not just one smartphone. However, the company has confirmed one Moto X smartphone, not an entire series right now. It was rumored quite a few months back that Motorola's new smartphone might offer customization options, at that time it was not known what the extent of this customization might be. It is believed that the company will give users unique color options that they can customize.

LG-F320 AnTuTu benchmark revealed, could be upcoming LG G2 with Snapdragon 800 processor

LG-F320 AnTuTu benchmark revealed, could be upcoming LG G2 with Snapdragon 800 processor

A mysterious device going by the name LG-F320 popped up in an AnTuTu benchmark and is leaving many scratching their heads. As spotted by GSMInsider, there's a pretty good chance we could be looking at the recently leaked LG G2. The benchmark — which originated from South Korea –  shows the device powered by an unspecified 2.3GHz processor. Given the high clock speed, we're inclined to believe we're looking at a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU, already confirmed to come bundled inside the upcoming LG G2.
With a score of 32,002, this is definitely no slouch.

Verizon Droid DNA Price Cut To $50

Verizon Droid DNA Price Cut To $50

Nearly two weeks back we reported that Verizon was looking to clear out its Droid DNA inventory. The carrier was rumored to be launching promos to boost sales, it was also said that no additional stock would be provided to stores once they ran out. The Verizon Droid DNA price has now been cut to $50, customers will obviously have to take out a two year contract. Verizon hasn't said anything about this price cut, so its not confirmed right now whether this price cut is a limited time offer.
Verizon was said to be clearing the inventory for something else, possibly a successor for the Droid DNA.

Xbox Head Don Mattrick Leaving Microsoft For Zynga [Rumor]

Xbox Head Don Mattrick Leaving Microsoft For Zynga [Rumor]

Microsoft's head of all things Xbox, Don Mattrick, is reportedly leaving the company in order to move on to a new position at Zynga, according to multiple sources. If the news turns out to be true, we can expect an announcement as early as today. We think it's safe to say Microsoft didn't have the best showing at E3 2013 as the price of their Xbox One was undercut by Sony's PlayStation 4 by $100 and they received the wrath of the Internet when they announced they would be attempting to take on the used game market with the console's tagging system which would only allow a game to only be sold only once.

Sure, the Chromebook Pixel is expertly constructed, but you won't find more than a sentence about that here. Nope, we'd rather talk about its blazing fast LTE speeds. Chromebook Pixel.

In fact, my specced-out MacBook Pro from 2011 - which relies on an HDD - feels antiquated in comparison. The load times are noticeably slower when relying on a conventional HDD instead of an SSD. But beyond all that, the Pixel has made me fall head over heels in love with inbuilt LTE.

DirectX 11.2 Will Be Exclusive To Windows 8.1 And Xbox One

Microsoft has now confirmed that DirectX 11.2 will be exclusive to Xbox One and Windows 8.1. The company hasn't provided any technical reasons as to why it is being limited, perhaps its being done to encourage users on Windows 7 and Windows XP to upgrade to the latest version of Windows. Both Windows 8.1 and Xbox One are going to be released later this year, a preview of the former has already been rolled out. Windows 8.1 will be available as a free update for all current Windows 8 users. Xbox One is expected to release this November.

Brahmin Theo iPad/Tablet Bag review

Brahmin Theo iPad/Tablet Bag review

Right after I wrote my recent news item about the Theo iPad Bag from Brahmin, I set about finding one for myself.  I promptly ordered the bag in the crocodile-embossed leather in Pecan.  The bag arrived recently.  Is it everything I hoped.
All images can be clicked for an enlarged view.

The Theo bag is made of genuine leather that's been embossed with a crocodile pattern.  They call their embossed leathers “Melbourne”; they are embossed to look like exotic skins, but they are made from cowhide.
