Tesla investor says Detroit 3 has lost electric car war, should go build flying cars instead

Tim Draper, co-founder of Draper Fisher Jurvetson, a multi-billion venture capital firm that supports Tesla, came to Detroit on Thursday slinging either inspiration or insults, depending on what side of the fence you sit on. "Don't live in your reality distortion field here in Detroit," Draper told the Detroit Free Press in an interview during Teleconomy conference at Wayne State University. "You've got to look at it and say, 'Yeah we could do something here. We can innovate.'"

"Create a flying car," he added. "Create something different because you've lost the electric car battle.

NASA awards $100,000 grant for sideways supersonic plane concept, sonic boom not included

NASA isn't just interested in extra-terrestrial exploration, but in pushing the boundaries of atmospheric flight as well, which is why it's just awarded $100,000 in funding for the supersonic plane concept shown above. As you can see, the symmetrical plane is basically all wing, and that's because it has two different configurations based on how fast you want to go. For normal, subsonic flight, a plane needs a decent wingspan to get off the ground and sustain flight at lower speeds. But, when you want to go supersonic, large wings become a bit of a drag, which is where the concept's bi-functional design comes in.

. While Sharp (SCHAY) may have messed up in producing next-generation iPhone screens, the company won't be making the same mistake for the iPad mini since Bloomberg reports that Apple (AAPL) is going with LG Display (LPL) and AU Optronics to produce displays for its smaller tablet. Unnamed sources told Bloomberg that Apple was employing AUO as a mobile device supplier for the first time after relying on the manufacturer in the past for its MacBooks.

Verizon CMO confirms carrier will sell a BlackBerry 10 device at launch

This bit of news got a bit buried amid the back-to-back-to-back press events that happened earlier this week, but Verizon Chief Marketing Officer Tami Erwin confirmed in an interview with CNET on Wednesday that the carrier will be offering at least one BlackBerry 10 smartphone at launch. As you'll recall, that launch date now sits at sometime in the first quarter of 2013, following some delays, and it's expected than an all-touch device will debut prior to a more traditional keyboard-equipped BlackBerry.

Unreleased Nokia Lauta QWERTY slider emerges, shows where MeeGo might have tread

Those of us who remember Nokia's late-stage MeeGo phone development will recall how the dreams fell apart: we got the N9 and the developer-tuned N950, but the future grew dark almost immediately as Nokia swung its attention further towards Windows Phone. If MyNokiaBlog's prototype leak is accurate, however, the engineers in Espoo had planned at least one more MeeGo phone for the general public: meet the Lauta, or RM-742. It would have been an "immediate" follow-up to the N9 that brought a tilting, sliding QWERTY keyboard to the party, with performance identical to its touch-only sibling.

Kindle Paperwhite leaked?

Kindle Paperwhite leaked?

Earlier this morning, there was an announcement from Amazon that their Kindle Fire e-reader was officially declared as ‘sold out‘, which can only mean one thing. Amazon is priming themselves to roll out something better and more advanced in order to keep up with the Joneses in the industry, namely the Google Nexus 7 as well as the possibility of an iPad mini which would definitely make a mark in the smaller display tablet segment.

Could the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 be headed for Sprint? [Rumor]

It wasn't too long ago that the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 was officially announced, although there was no word on which carriers it will be launched on in the US. So far it seems that T-Mobile could be getting their own Galaxy Note 2 and according to a post in the XDA Forums, it seems that Sprint could be getting the device as well. This was uncovered by an XDA forum member who was going through Samsung RDF's and spotted an unannounced device, the Samsung SPH-L900. He then reached out to his "source" who confirmed that this was the Galaxy Note 2, and based on the model name it looks like it could be destined for Sprint's network.

Nexus 7 overclocked to 2GHz

Nexus 7 overclocked to 2GHz

There is nothing quite like a speed boost to your device by overclocking it. After all, it not only offers a new lease of life, but it also saves you money on purchasing a faster model or make. Of course, there are also the downsides to it, such as voiding your warranty, and if the processor or chipset you have overclocked was not meant to run at higher clock speeds, you will definitely run the risk of the device overheating and heaven forbid, catch fire while it is in your pants. Not only that, the drain on your battery life will also be increased, which is not a good thing at all.

Mortal Kombat is a fighting game that is probably known by gamers all over the world and has evolved in terms of graphics and gameplay through the years, but will updated graphics and new characters be enough to keep gamers interested. While that remains to be seen, Nether Realm's Ed Boon stated in an interview with CVG that he is looking to make the next Mortal Kombat title as innovative as possible, and hinted that the game could be released on next-gen consoles as well. "Just philosophically, I don't think we could take the approach of doing the same thing but adding new characters in our next Mortal Kombat game.

iPhone 5 part leak hints at NFC hardware?

Earlier this morning, we looked at possible leaked images of the upcoming iPhone 5, and it seems that there was more to it than met the eye. Everything about it looks dapper and pretty much run on the mill, but if you were to take note of the new square chip subsystem located right at the top, it might just be the elusive NFC hardware that was speculated in the past – at least according to the eagle-eyed folks over at Macotakara. Since NFC code was discovered in hardware dumps from soon-to-come iPhone prototypes, chances of NFC technology being employed in the new iPhone 5 is pretty high, falling just short of a confirmation.

American Airlines becomes first FAA-friendly carrier to use iPads through whole flights

You don't have to wait for an FAA rethink to use your iPad on an airliner below 10,000 feet — if you're part of an American Airlines crew, that is. As of this month, the air carrier is the first cleared by the FAA to use iPads in the cockpit at every point during a flight. The program starts just with Boeing 777 pilots at first, but it should eventually grow to save $1.2 million in weight-related fuel costs per year across the airline, not to mention a few trees and the strain of 35-pound flight bags.

World's oldest color film footage discovered in museum archive (video)

Cached away for over a century, the world's first color moving pictures have been shown for the first time yesterday, according to the National Media Museum in the UK. The celluloid, shot by inventor Edward Raymond Turner in 1899, was actually in black and white and it was only through a curator's research that its colorful significance was also unearthed. When the footage was first shot, each frame was run consecutively through red, green or blue gels, and the process needed to be reversed during projection to reveal the color.

Not only have we seen the new Nissan compact do its slow striptease on the spy shot circuit, the car already debuted for the Chinese market as the Sylphy during this year's Beijing Motor Show. Still, that doesn't make it any less of a big deal. The new model is roughly 150 pounds lighter than the car it replaces.

Under the hood, the outgoing Sentra's 2.0-liter inline-four has been ditched in favor of a smaller and oddly less powerful 1.8-liter unit.

We haven't seen weather stations garner the same level of clever mobile integration as other pieces of household gear - like, say, thermostats. Netatmo wants its newly available Urban Weather Station to inject a similar dose of life into a category that some of us still associate with the thermometer by the window. The aluminum tube design certainly gives a fresh look to the WiFi-linked indoor and outdoor sensors, but the real trick is the matching iOS (and eventually Android) app.

Firefox 15 is barely fresh off the vine, and we're already looking at a beta version 16 for both desktop platforms and Android. Mozilla's test release builds in the first support for web apps that play nicely with the Mozilla Marketplace; as long as titles have a slight amount of extra formatting, they can slot into Firefox without hiccups. More treats exist if you're running certain platforms: the Android crowd receives a Safari-style Reader Mode that strips out the fluff from pages, while Mac users see the once test-only VoiceOver support flipped on by default to improve accessibility.

So last week we saw a whole bunch of new Nokia-related goodies. There were phones (of course), charging pillows, a slew of retailers offering charging stations, and a bevy of new apps. One thing that didn't get a mention was the new Luna Bluetooth headsets. These may look familiar, but in keeping with the trend, these now also support wireless charging. As always, you have a near rainbow of color choices, and can expect up to eight hours talk time and 35 hours on standby. The NFC-enabled headsets do also have a micro-USB port, should you find yourself away from wireless power options.

Bezos didsay, however, that the new Kindle will have new fonts, sharper text and 15 percent faster page turns.
