New car shoppers less willing to consider Hyundai, Kia after mileage overstatement

New car shoppers less willing to consider Hyundai, Kia after mileage overstatement

Summarizing the results of research carried out by Edmunds, Reuters reports that consumers' are less inclined to purchase cars from Hyundai and Kia due to the company's recent snafu over inflated mileage claims. The Edmunds metric of "purchase intent" declined by 1.9 percent for the Kia Soul (pictured), meaning that the largest drop in consideration coincided with the model that suffered the biggest drop in mileage ratings.

Daimler gains full control of Mercedes F1 team after buying out Middle Eastern stake

When rumors surfaced earlier this year regarding the desire of Abu Dhabi's Aabar Investments to completely shed its stake in Daimler, no one knew why and neither party would comment. The Middle Eastern investment firm took a 9.1-percent stake in Daimler in 2009, had dropped that to 3.1 percent earlier this year, then got rid of the remainder in October. Part of that original deal in 2009 was a 40-percent share in the Mercedes Formula One team, and Reuters has reported that Daimler just bought that back as well.

We check up on the Back To The Future DeLorean Time Machine restoration

Since first hearing about the restoration project to bring the Back to the Future DeLorean DMC-12 time machine back to life, we haven't heard that much about the progress. The project was supposed to be "concluded" over the summer, but it turns out finding original parts or creating all new ones for a fictional time machine isn't as easy as it sounds. actually, it doesn't even sound that easy.

LA Design Challenge entrants take CHiPs to 2025

This year's theme for the LA Design Challenge was announced back in September and focuses on creating a "Highway Patrol Vehicle 2025," and with the Jon and Ponch long into retirement, we get our first glimpse of what a CHiPs of the future might look like. BMW, General Motors, Honda, Mercedes-Benz and Subaru have all accepted the challenge, and each has released an entrant for the annual design competition with the winner being announced on November 29 during the LA Auto Show. Entrants range from unmanned drones to vehicles that we could actually picture on the roads in the near future.

Camera-Equipped Mannequins Placed in Stores

Camera-Equipped Mannequins Placed in Stores

If you have this odd feeling that mannequins are watching you while shopping, you may not like this news. Some retail stores have reported set up mannequins with cameras embedded into one eye. The mannequins, called EyeSee, uses facial-recognition software to log age, gender, and race of the customers they see. The technology was originally meant to identify shoplifters, but why the need to identify race with that rationale is beyond me.

Thankfully, retailers such the Benetton Group have other ideas. The company uses EyeSee mannequins to personalize offerings of each store.

Nokia Lumia 920 Sold Out Virtually Everywhere

Nokia Lumia 920 Sold Out Virtually Everywhere

Facebook is nice, but slower when compared to the iPhone. This bodes well for Microsoft as well, as it shows that the market is open to Windows Phone 8 – assuming that the other factor of Nokia churning out enough units of the Lumia 920 to meet anticipated market demand is not a paltry sum. Well, the Lumia 920 does see stiff competition on paper from HTC's 8X handset , but it seems that the Lumia 920 has enough firepower in its hardware to deliver strongly among the average consumer.

Wii U Bricked During Firmware Update

Wii U Bricked During Firmware Update

Normally when one performs a firmware update on a piece of hardware, you generally make sure it remains plugged into the power source instead of relying on the internal battery's charge (where possible), and you do not touch any of the cables hooked up to it until the entire process is done. The thing is, video game industry journalist Ben Fritz unplugged his spanking new Wii U during a firmware update as there was no way to cancel the download and he did not want to wait for the stipulated two hours required to complete the update, resulting in a bricked Wii U.

Firefox browser add-on lets us try Firefox OS in an all-Mozilla universe

We've had the chance to experiment with early versions of Firefox OS for awhile - just not in Firefox the browser, where you'd nearly expect it to have shown first. At least one person appreciates that seemingly natural fit. A new Firefox OS simulator add-on, r2d2b2g, lets us try Mozilla's upcoming mobile platform from within the company's own browser for everything that doesn't depend on native hardware, including the browser and Firefox Marketplace.

Windows Phone 8 Reboot Mystery Plagues Phones

Windows Phone 8 Reboot Mystery Plagues Phones

While Windows Phone 8 is one of the smoothest mobile operating system experiences to date, there seems to be a niggling reboot issue for Windows Phone 8-powered devices. Apparently, owners of the Nokia Lumia 920 and the Windows Phone 8X from HTC seem to be affected far more than the others, as their devices do seem to reset themselves for no apparent reason. Random reboots can be one of the more irritating experiences, and I can definitely vouch for that.

The minds at Ducati have been busy lately. The Italian manufacturer pulled back the curtains on three new machines at the 2012 EICMA International Motorcycle Show, including the water-cooled 2013 Hypermotard. Using and 821cc variant of the company's Testastretta 11-degree DS V-twin, the Hypermotard dishes out 110 horsepower and 65.8 pound-feet of torque thanks in part to a smaller bore and longer stroke than the standard 848cc engine. The revised Hypermotard tips the scales at 436.5 lbs fully fueled and boasts Kayaba front forks with 6.7-inches of travel.

Ever wish you could just push a slow-mo button and cause the hustle and bustle of city life to ease up a little. Maybe you'd just like to seal yourself off from your surroundings within the confines of a shiny aluminum sphere. German artist Lorenz Potthast didn't stop at thinking about it, he did something. Dubbed the "Decelerator," the avant garde piece of headgear does just that: it has a camera that feeds video to the head-mounted display inside, with the wearer (or someone else) able to control the speed of the video playback with a remote.

The race is firmly on, and the HTC Droid DNA will have to turn back frequently in order to see just who else is breathing down its neck – and LG's F240 is said to be another smartphone that will come with a 1080p display, this coming after we heard that Samsung could very well release a 4.99x1080p Super AMOLED display at CES 2013. The LG F240 (right now, this remains as a codename, so you could very well expect it to be known as something else entirely by the time it is ready to hit the market), where it is speculated to come with a 1,920 x 1,080 pixels resolution display.

Sina Weibo exceeds 400 million users, sees increasing mobile traffic

Microblogging site Sina Weibo, China's answer to Twitter, reported a pretty dazzling statistic in its third quarter results: it now boasts over 400 million registered users. We can't be sure how many are active, of course, but it's still a vast number considering appeal is localized to the People's Republic. It also means Sina is winning the popularity contest with social media competitor Tencent, although it humbly acknowledges their services are somewhat different. The company's platform is still evolving, and it's only recently seen mobile usage exceed computers, so is shifting product focus accordingly.
