Firefox's tablet UI scheduled for Firefox 9 integration

Firefox's tablet UI scheduled for Firefox 9 integration

Firefox 6 may have been just released, but I have to admit that versions 7, 8 and 9 may be much more interesting from the end user's point of view. Firefox 7, for example will bring the Azure 2D graphics API and memory enhancements, Firefox 8 will make add-ons much safer to deal with and we now hear that Firefox 9 is likely to get the much anticipated tablet UI. Mozilla just posted the tablet UI as a deliverable for Firefox 9.
Firefox 8 nightlies apparently integrate a first version of the UI already, even if it is not enabled and not even accessible via the about:config menu. We would expect the feature to surface over the next few weeks.

Sony: Vita will pull gamers from tablets and phones

Sony: Vita will pull gamers from tablets and phones

In a mobile, app-driven world, Sony is convinced that gamers will flock to the PlayStation Vita. Based on the official specs alone, Sony could be right. Then again, Nvidia's Kal-El is also around to corner, so we'll have to see how this turns out. In an interview with GameSpot during Gamescom 2011, Sony's director of hardware marketing John Koller said that gamers will discard their smartphones and tablets for the company's delayed handheld console, the PlayStation Vita.

Let the liquidation begin - HP's 16GB TouchPad on sale for $99

Well, that didn't take long. It's only been a day since HP announced its intention to discontinue production of webOS devices, and it looks like the outfit's already throwing its flagship tablet in the bargain bin. PreCentral reports that HP sent out a memo to its affiliates asking them to cut the price of the ill-fated TouchPad to $99 and $149 for the 16GB and 32GB editions, respectively. The date apparently put forward by HP is August 20th, but at least two Canadian retailers (Best Buy and Future Shop) have already made the cut - though both outlets show the sale ending August 22nd.

Motorola XT531 Blazes through the FCC

The Motorola XT531 has been announced for China, Europe, and Latin America, but it very well could find a US release before its world tour is finished. According to a new FCC filing, the XT531 seems primed for a release on AT&T with support for radio bands compatible with the carrier’s network. The Android 2.3 handset features a 3.5-inch display and dual camera setup (5MP rear/VGA front-facing) and will go by several monikers, including Spice XT in parts of Latin America and Fire XT around Europe.

Just yesterday we reported that Telus is now selling the iPhone 4 for just $99.99, when you sign a new three-year contract. Well, today Bell and Virgin Mobile have followed in its footsteps, and they've both started offering Apple's latest smartphone for less than $100. Bell has the iPhone 4 for $99.95 with a new three-year contract. Of course you can also get the device sans contract, but that will cost you a hefty $659.95.

Motorola's XT531 hits the FCC, ready for its US crossover

Motorola's XT531 has gone through more name changes than a certain rapper-cum-vodka shilling mogul, and the trend might continue as it makes its way to the US. The budget-friendly handset, known as the Fire XT in Europe and the Spice XT in Latin America, has just surfaced at the FCC toting AT&T-compatible GSM bands, UMTS / HSDPA 850MHz / 1900MHz support, WiFi and Bluetooth. Based on Moto's official PR for the handset's Chinese release, we know this 3.5-incher also sports a front-facing VGA / 5 megapixel rear camera, and is set to launch with Android 2.3 onboard.

Smart MIMAS transfers medical images to Android tablet and smartphones

Smart MIMAS transfers medical images to Android tablet and smartphones

KDDI Labs of Japan has developed the Smart MIMAS system that was meant for use in hospitals, where it allows medical images to be transferred and viewed on both Android tablets and smartphones. These images can be sent over in a secure manner to specialists regardless of where they are – of course, this would require a permanent Internet connection. This enables the medical specialists to be on-call in case of an emergency, where they will then be able to administer quick and accurate instructions to staff at the hospital.

Motorola Droid Bionic advertised at $299?

The Motorola Droid Bionic is said to be the next big thing where the Android superphone category is concerned, giving close competition to the Galaxy S II. Originally, there were whispers of the Motorola Droid Bionic being slapped with a $250 price point – and while that is already higher than what most people are used to for a high-end phone (which tend to go for $199 with a 2-year contract), it seems that an advertisement for the Droid Bionic has given a $299 price tag – alongside the customary 2-year contract, of course.

New Steel Battalion Heavy Armor Kinect first-person shooter trailer unveiled [video]

Steel Battalion Heavy Armor was first announced during the Tokyo Game Show last year, but we haven't heard much on the title since then. You'll take the battlefield as a soldier in a 2082 war fighting with MechWarrior-style machines and cannons.

As a thank you to its fans for helping it achieve 1,000 “Likes” on Facebook, id Software is offering its iOS game “Rage” for free this week. Rage made its debut in November 2010 and puts you in the shoes of a “Mutant Bash TV!” game-show contestant. Your job is to make it through the levels killing mutants to make a deal with the show's host, J.K. Stiles before dying. We played the first-person rail shooter back when it launched and enjoyed the high-resolution graphics on the iPad, and it's definitely worth the download. And we're not the only fans: the game has a 4 star review average after 2,987 ratings.

Sprint Drops The Price On Epic 4G, Nexus S 4G and Echo

Looks like Sprint flew under our radar and dropped the price yesterday on some of their “old school” Android lineup. If you’re a new customer you can now sign up for a 2-year agreement and snag yourself a Samsung EPIC 4G for $100, Nexus S for $50 ($30 online), and the Kyocera Echo for free. Don’t forget, the girls — they love the Android (pictured above). I’d have to say, all of these are pretty solid Android devices (yes, even the Echo). Lets see if Sprint can’t clear out some of their stock with these now extremely affordable handsets.

Nature inspired tree stump speaker

Nature inspired tree stump speaker

There's something inherently organic about the way technology and nature blend together, despite them being polar opposites. These "tree stump" speakers by Thomas Laenner seems to have managed to accomplish just that. As you can see based on the design, apart from the wires, you can't really see any knobs or dials and that's because the circular disc that controls the volume and power has been discretely hidden.
Specs wise, the tree stump speaker features two 4" speakers which also comes with a 3.5mm audio jack that in theory should be able to work with any media player, i.e. iPod, iPhone, Zune MP3 player, etc.

Cadillac ELR Coupe EV unveiled by General Motors

Cadillac ELR Coupe EV unveiled by General Motors

When it comes to electric vehicles (EV), rarely do we equate them with comfort, style, luxury or power. Instead we tend to think of EVs as fuel-savers, efficient, environmentally friendly and green, but General Motors is hoping to change that with their Cadillac ELR Coupe which they had just unveiled today. Let's be honest, based on the photo above and title not withstanding, you probably assumed that this would be a regular car, perhaps even a sports car, but in reality it is an electric vehicle, or rather a hybrid of sorts.

Updated Wii Console No Longer Plays Gamecube Games

Nintendo is about to roll out a revised model of the Wii, just in time for pre-holiday shopping. The streamlined model now sits horizontally instead of vertically like the original. It is also a bit smaller and no long has the ability to play Gamecube games. The tweaked Wii could be the last act for this particular system as Nintendo will move on to its next-gen console Wii U.
Since its launch in November 2006, the Wii has sold over 87 million units, making it the best-selling game console of all time (even outdoing consoles with better graphics like Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3).

Apple may invest $1 billion in Sharp LCD factory for iPhone, iPad displays

Apple may invest $1 billion in a Sharp LCD factory to ensure adequate production of screens for its iPhone and iPad, according to MF Global FXA Securities analyst David Rubenstein. Apple typically buys its LCD displays from Samsung, LG and Chimei Innolux, although recent reports have suggested the iPhone maker has boosted its orders with Samsung after LG failed to meet iPad 2 display requirements. However, Apple's recent legal battles with Samsung in the United States, the European Union and Australia could be why the company is looking to invest in other manufacturers.
