Diffbot raises $2 million in funding

Diffbot, an API which relies on visual learning to parse web content, is something interesting that we talked about last August. Well, it seems that this particular project has garnered enough interest in order to raise up to $2 million in seed funding from investors who want to see this visual learning robot come to fruition, as it is capable of extracting as well as analyzing web content in the manner that humans do.

Professor Xavier, an oxymoron in a sense as his being one of the most powerful telepaths, is confined to a frail body that does not allow him to walk around freely, did receive some help in the past through alien technology, although he needed to expend plenty of telepathic powers to help him achieve such a feat.

MotoCzysz aims to refashion TAC Motors' Stark into an eco-friendly off-roader

Imagine barreling through the Amazonian rainforest with machetes flailing from the windows of your off-road rig, and just as you're about to kick the vehicle into low gear, you pause to consider the impact of your vehicle's exhaust (among other things) on the delicate ecosystem around. Fortunately for eco-minded folks, Portland-based EV manufacturer MotoCzysz - creator of the wicked E1pc electric motorcycle - plans to allay some of those concerns with its all-electric eStark SUV. For the basis of the vehicle, the company has turned to Brazilian auto manufacturer TAC Motors.

Judge: Google did not infringe on SSO of Sun/Oracle's Java

Google's won another major victory, today, in the courtrooms where Oracle are suing them for patent and copyright infringement due to Java's use in Android. Oracle lost the patent phase of the case, and they thought they'd initially get a break on the copyright phase as they were able to get the jury to agree that Google infringed on the structure, sequence, and organization of their Java APIs. Of the 37 APIs that Google were accused of “stealing,” Judge William Alsup found that 97% were written by Google, and 3% were freely replicable under a doctrine of merger.

Taxes. Taxes. Taxes. That's what you folks living within the Garden State will have to pay on Amazon purchases starting July 2013. The recent news - which is likely to cause some of you to throw a minor temper tantrum - comes shortly after Jeff Bezos & Co. settled with the Texas government to also begin collecting sales tax in that state. Similar to the Lone Star deal, though, Amazon's agreed to create about 1,500 full-time jobs by building a couple of distribution centers in New Jersey - and let's face it, job creation is always good news.

2013 Audi A3

An Old Vanguard Gets Ready For a New War. In 1996, the first Audi A3 essentially established the premium compact segment, but that distinction really only carried significance in Europe. Gradually, and especially in its two most recent generations, its corporate sibling, the Volkswagen Golf, has become something of a true premium hatch without the badge, leaving more and more people to wonder if there was a point to splurging for the costlier Audi. Then the new Mini Cooper came along to effectively steal the thunder in the new century's compact premium market.

AT&T cuts prices on international data roaming, goes easier on overages

Could it be. Is AT&T addressing bill shock by simply trying to make international data roaming costs reasonable. From the looks of its new Data Global Add-On deals, that might be the case. The baseline price is up from last year at $30 per month, but you'll get 120MB of data for your trouble - an amount that used to cost $50. The next step up not only costs less than before, at $60 versus the old $100, but ups the data ever so gently to 300MB in the process.

Ever wondered what goes on inside a Formula 1 car. No, we're not talking about Jenson Button's delicate elbow movements, we mean inside the car. Well, it turns out that we're not the only ones, and fortuitously for us, some people with the actual means to find out - the Sauber F1 team - have done the noble thing, and cut one in half. Yes, a real F1 car. Cut in half. It took two years to achieve, but from tip to tail, it's all there on display. That precious steering wheel you see drivers carry with them? Halved. User-adjustable glasses is adaptable

Those of us wearing glasses tend to be subject to taunts at the playground, being called all sorts of names in the process as other kids mercifully tease the weaker members or “outcasts”, but as we grow up, we know that wearing glasses are also handy in attracting certain demographic of the opposite sex. Heck, glasses design has come a long way as well, where some of them are far out sexy these days. Unfortunately, the problem with wearing a pair of glasses is this – you will need to go for annual eye exams to see whether there is a need to change the lenses to coincide with your visual power.

BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 beta rolling out in a few days' time?

Word on the street has it that Research in Motion (RIM) has every intention to roll out their first beta of the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 before the month is over. Considering how there are just a couple more days after today before May makes way for June, does this mean the next couple of days will see PlayBook users (yes, all 10 of you at the back of the room there) will be an occasion to celebrate. In fact, a PlayBook product manager did confirm the news via Twitter today, so I guess all there is to it would be an official press release and the thing is as good as gold.

Though its medical brethren are considerably slimmer, at 2.4mm in diameter, Olympus says its iPLEX TX is the most slender industrial videoscope on our big blue marble. Rather than using traditional fiber optics to capture footage reminiscent of comic book print, the iPLEX TX houses a miniature CMOS atop one end of the scope and an HDR image processing technology called WiDER to preserve detail and brighten images. The eagle-eyed scope is also 200 times more resistant to frictional wear than fiberscopes and has over double the slip strength.

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology. Despite amassing something close to a billion users, Facebook has mainly stayed true to the startup mantra of staying focused on a few core things. In this case, that has been promoting openness and sharing among friends and, increasingly, the world at large. Such was the case for its rival Google at the launch of the search company's IPO.
