French court lifts registration ban on Mercedes with contested refrigerant

French court lifts registration ban on Mercedes with contested refrigerant

The brief alphanumerics R134a and R1234yf are codes for a growing battle between carmakers, states and the EU. The air-conditioning refrigerant R134a has been banned by the EU for being too damaging to the environment, with R1234yf mandated as its replacement. Daimler and Volkswagen say that in their own studies, though, R1234yf can be more dangerous in an accident, potentially starting fires and releasing poisonous hydrogen fluoride gas.

Holovision Full Sized Hologram A Possibility

Holovision Full Sized Hologram A Possibility

Holograms have always fascinated humankind ever since the idea of it was shown off in a science fiction movie. In fact, who would not want to have a holographic representation of the other person on the line appear in front of you whenever you take a call. It would be so cool, and even cooler when you have a human-sized hologram to play around with. HoloVision could pave the way to such a future, where this Kickstarter project claims to deliver a free-floating, life-sized image that will hover eight feet from its projector, clearly making good ol' R2-D2 obsolete with his rendition of Princess Leia.

640,000 iPads Given To LA School Kids For Free

They do say that there is no such thing as a free lunch in this world, and a bunch of school going kids in Los Angeles will agree with you, but they would certainly dispute the statement that there is no such thing as a free iPad. After all, it seems that a whopping 640,000 iPads will be given away to eligible school kids in Los Angeles, and all of these without requiring those little ones to fork out a single cent for their iPad. The initial batch of 31,000 iPads will be handed out this year, while the remaining bunch of 609,000 iPads will be arriving next year.

Honda celebrates the life of Ayrton Senna the best way it knows how

Honda is returning to Formula One in 2015 with McLaren, and when that engine maker and that F1 constructor are mentioned together, two other words are never far behind: Ayrton Senna. There are engine suppliers, constructors and drivers that have bigger numbers, but those three form a triumvirate that came close to defining F1 in the eighties. Honda Japan has produced a commercial called Sound of Honda that celebrates Senna at a race that turned out to be one of the most momentous of his career for good and bad reasons: the 1989 grand prix at Suzuka where he won, then was stripped of, the driver's championship.

SanDisk introduces wireless flash storage drives

Flash drives aren't anything new, wireless storage devices aren't either, but SanDisk has managed to combine the two in a fun, ultra-portable, attractive USB drive.  SanDisk Connect Wireless Flash Drives include a 16GB or 32GB option, while the larger cube-shaped SanDisk Connect Media drives include 32GB or 64GB versions, both for sharing your stored photos, documents, movies and music wirelessly amongst your mobile devices.  You can even easily expand this storage space further.  The flash drive has a microSD slot, while the media drive includes a handy standard SDHC card slot.  Nice.

Four Million MacBook Sales Expected In Q4, 2013

Four Million MacBook Sales Expected In Q4, 2013

There have been many reports recently that consumers are shifting away from conventional computers such as desktops and laptops towards tablets. The market is said to be in a steady decline. However, according to a new Digitimes report, Apple may end of moving four million MacBook units in this particular quarter. What's baffling about this report is that in the same quarter last year, Apple managed to move four million units of all Macs, not just the MacBook models.
If this does end up happening, it would mark a significant growth as compared to Q3, 2013 as well as last year's Q4.

Google Translate Throws In Handwriting Input On Homepage

It was sometime last year when Google Translate for Android was introduced to the world of handwriting input, and earlier this year, Google Input Tools on desktop was updated through the inclusion of additional new virtual keyboards, input method editors, and transliteration input tools. It seems that progress is constant, and to remain behind would be folly, as the input tools have taken another step further today where handwriting input is now part and parcel of the Google Translate homepage. Basically, handwriting input would allow you to translate a written expression, never mind that you do not know how to type the characters.

Today the FCC has approved a new and mysterious LG D801 smartphone. Which might turn out to be the G2 flagship that the South Korean company will officially announce on August 7. The FCC doesn't usually reveal much about important devices while approving them, but now it posted a sketch of the D801. And this certainly looks like the G2 teased by LG in an official video yesterday. Check out the two images below.

The LG G2 has volume buttons on the back. And we can also see them on the D801, just under the rear camera.

According to the FCC, the D801 comes with AT&T-friendly LTE connectivity (bands 4 and 17).

The electric vehicle has gone gold at Renault-Nissan, clocking 100,000 sales in a three-year period that began with the first Nissan Leaf being sold in Silicon Valley, California in 2010. Since then, the Leaf has become the EV champion of the world, selling more than 71,000 units so far, the majority of those in the US. The 100,000th EV sold by the Alliance was also a Leaf and also sold in the US, but on the other side of the country, in Georgia. By comparison, Renault has sold 30,000 electric vehicles since late 2011, looking after other segments of the EV market with the Kangoo Z.E., Zoe, Twizy and Fluence Z.E.

Sizing up the HTC One mini

Sizing up the HTC One mini

The HTC One mini is essentially an HTC One in a smaller shell, but does the handset's size really live up to the name. The HTC One mini's 132 x 63.2 x 9.25mm size isn't exactly small. Overall, the HTC One mini is only 3.9% shorter and 7.3 percent less wide than the HTC One and the difference of .05mm of thickness can barely seen by the human eye. The HTC One mini's 14.6% decrease in weight is certainly a lot more noticeable, but we're a bit perplexed as to why the HTC One mini so big.
To give you a visual representation of the HTC One mini's size, we've aligned it perfectly with the HTC One in the image below.

If a report from AutoExpress is to be believed, BMW will have a surprise in store for August's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. The sleuths on the other side of The Pond are expecting to see a production-ready concept of the M3 Coupe-replacing BMW M4. The near-production showcar move is something we've seen from BMW, particularly when it comes to M products, over the years. Kyocera C6750 Hits The FCC, Prepped For Verizon Debut

Whenever a particular device arrives at the FCC, it will more or less mean just one thing – that it is being prepared to roll out to hit the masses, and that news alone should make most folks let out a whoop of joy. Of course, this would only apply if the particular device that was being released was something that was looked forward to by many, but if you were to settle for something that is a wee bit more obscure, like say, the Kyocera C6750, then chances are many would not be terribly excited by it, but rather, they might look upon it like some sort of curious device.
