Why Google's autonomous car tech could be worth more than its web business

Why Google's autonomous car tech could be worth more than its web business

According to Forbes, Google may be into driverless cars for more than the party tricks. As part of a three-part series on the tech giant's foray into the automotive sphere, writer Chunka Miu says Google's efforts could have a widespread impact on the nature of transportation worldwide. The company believes it can theoretically reduce traffic accidents, energy consumption and the number of personal vehicles on the road by 90 percent should autonomous models take hold, and those savings could equate to a massive revenue stream as automakers work to adapt the technology to their products.

Biker blocks freeway to propose marriage in middle of road

Biker blocks freeway to propose marriage in middle of road

There aren't quite words to contain our exasperation with stunts like this. Mere days after we watched a gaggle of jokers shut down an Orange County freeway for the sole purpose of doing donuts in the middle of the road, Hector "Tank" Martinez managed to talk some 300 motorcycle riders into helping him bring Interstate 10 in Los Angeles to a standstill. While Martinez used the moment as an excuse to execute a burnout of his own, his larger purpose was to get down on one knee in the middle lane and propose to his girlfriend, Paige Hernandez.

2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class interior caught in spy shots

With the redesigned 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class getting closer to production, the camera-wielding crew over at Autospies somehow managed to get inside of the car to snap some detailed spy shots. As the prototypes continue to shed camouflage, it would appear that Mercedes-Benz is getting closer to unveiling the car, and with the Geneva and New York auto shows coming up, it could be sooner rather than later. From what we can see of this car's interior, the overall look of the S-Class' cabin isn't a ground-breaking departure from the current car, but it has been completely redesigned with more advanced technology.

Luxurious leather gear bags from Avallone

Luxurious leather gear bags from Avallone

Avallone says their sophisticated City Messenger bags are for men, but I don't see why women wouldn't like them, too.  These bags are certainly not the distressed leather bags often marketed for men.  They are made of Italian Nappa leather with cow suede accents and silver-colored metal hardware.  The bag measures 13.5″ X 10″ X 3.5″ and weighs 2.5 pounds.  It has a metal tuck-lock front closure; there are no external pockets to interrupt the sleek lines of the bag.  Inside is a zippered pocket and two large multipurpose pockets.

Always Innovating's MeCam Micro Quadcopter

Flying machines no longer seem to surprise most people. But what will still make them quite fascinating is how small some people can make them to be and still be a capable flying machine to travel around. Always Innovating has come up with a Micro Quadcopter along these lines with its MeCam prototype. The MeCam Micro Quadcopter is designed to be small, enough to fit into the palm of one's hands. But it is designed with a number of sensors that not only lets it fly but also work to avoid running into walls or into people while flying. It is also designed to be voice controlled.

The 2013 Rolex 24-hour race at Daytona comes down to the last hour [spoilers, w/video]

It took 24 hours to run the race, but it was the last one was stuffed with the high action as four cars were still trying to figure out how to gain victory on the track and in the pits. Along with the obligatory crashes, spins, mechanical issues and retirements had come numerous penalties, a double-digit number of full-course yellows and two hours of fog that turned early Sunday morning into a stretch of parade laps. Chip Ganassi's team owned it, the #1 Telmex Riley-BMW taking pole position and the number two spot on the grid and winning the race with Juan Pablo Montoya behind the wheel at the checkered flag.

Why does the Corvette Stingray have so many vents? Here's why

Just looking at the new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, it's not hard to see that the car's design was created with aerodynamics at the forefront, but Chevrolet designers point out exactly what went into designing the iconic coupe in a pair of recently released videos. The videos show the Corvette going through early design phases, including clay models and wind tunnel tests, as well as talking to the car's chief engineer, Tadge Juechter. Both videos help explain various aspects of the C7 Corvette, but it's the aero tuning of the car that is most interesting.
