NVIDIA unleashes GeForce GTX 690 graphics card, loads it with dual Kepler GPUs, charges $1k

Would you look at that. NVIDIA hinted it would be coming today, and it looks like the tease is living up to the hype. The company stormed into the weekend at its Shanghai Game Festival by unleashing its latest offering, the GeForce GTX 690 - and oh yeah, it's packing two 28nm Kepler GPUs. Trumping the recently released GTX 680 as the "worlds fastest graphics card," it's loaded with a whopping 3,072 Cuda cores. The outer-frame is made from trivalent chromium-plated aluminum, while you'll find thixomolded magnesium alloy around the fan for vibration reduction and added cooling.

Watch a vintage Lamborghini Cheetah SUV promo

Lamborghini was in the off-road business before the cult classic LM002, cooperating with MTI on a military vehicle concept dubbed Cheetah in the mid-seventies that it hoped to sell to the U.S. armed forces. The 4,500-pound, fiberglass-bodied troop carrier used a 5.9-liter, 180-horsepower Chrysler engine mounted in back. Hardly Cheetah-like, the vehicle delivered lackluster performance and didn't handle well.
Even worse, it was a badly translated copy of a vehicle already made by another firm, which landed MTI and Lamborghini in court when the Cheetah was revealed at the 1977 Geneva Motor Show. The U.S.

Canon reports slightly higher profits in Q1, teases new compact cameras on the way

Canon reported its Q1 2012 earnings this week, and things certainly appear to have gone better than the last time we checked in when it replaced the company president. While revenue declined slightly, net profit reached 61.54 billion yen ($766 million), up 11 percent from a year ago. There's no executive moves to report, however on the earnings call executive VP and CFO Toshizo Tanaka noted a unit sales increase of 30 percent for SLR cameras including the new EOS 5D Mark III as well as the cheaper T3i, Mark II and 60D models, combined with strong sales for WiFi-connected point-and-shoots.

China's Unified CPU Architecture, Why and When

China's Unified CPU Architecture, Why and When

Image courtesy of ExtremeTech. Part of the web was buzzing about the fact that China's ministry of technology  is trying to define a ‘unified” processor architecture, based either on an existing platform, or a new one. By “processor architecture”, we mean “instruction set architecture” or (ISA), like X86 is for Intel. The instruction set is basically “opcodes” (or operation code, which are the most basic machine-instructions), that will be understood and executed by processors.

Study: Nokia Has Earned More from iPhone Than Lumia Sales

After Microsoft was found to be making more from licensing its patents out to Android device manufacturer than selling its own Windows Phones now it seems that Nokia is also earning more from doing the same thing with Apple for its iPhone than selling its range of Lumia smartphones. As far as Q1 is concerned, Nokia faced a loss with sales of its mobile devices which resulted in an overall loss of $1.7 billion. This happened despite the launching of a few new Lumia Windows Phone devices.

HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE rumored for a 10th May release

Perhaps Verizon slipped up by announcing the Droid Incredible 4G LTE a tad early on their DroidDoes website, but unfortunately apart from its price we have to wonder when exactly will we be able to get our hands on it. Assuming PhoneDog's sources are to be believed, the upcoming Droid Incredible 4G LTE is slated for a release on Verizon's network come 10th of May. While no price was mentioned, we can safely assume that it will be sticking to its $299.99 price tag (on a new two-year contract) that was listed on the DroidDoes website.

Car expresses itself, will future vehicles go all emo on us?

Car expresses itself, will future vehicles go all emo on us?

Men who love their cars often describe their rides in feminine terms, and perhaps advancements made by Nicholas Pennycooke of the MIT Media Lab could very well usher in a new age of loving one's vehicle in more ways than one. Nicholas claims that more emotional vehicles will be able to be more user friendly, as it can communicate its intent to humans around it. For example, if the world has advanced to such a stage where driverless cars are the norm, it might be programmed to never hit someone else on the road, but how would you know that the car has “seen” you in advance.

Zombies are more like us than you'd imagine – although they have different reasons, they hate flossing as much as many humans. That's one of the insights gleaned from a new web commercial for the Chevrolet Cruze in which one of our "zombie overlords" shares his feelings on various topics, including The Bowtie's small car. It's too soon for Chevrolet's new agency to have done this, and we know giving the thumbs up to an ad is a matter of opinion, but as far as we're concerned, to the agency that's responsible for this, we offer our kudos.

MetroPCS announces Q1 2012 results: total revenues up, new subscriber growth shrinks

Regional network MetroPCS has announced total revenues of approximately $1.3 billion for Q1 2012, up from $1.2 bilion in the last quarter and up seven percent from the same period in 2011. Users on contract now total 9.5 million, with 16 percent of them making the move across to a smartphone. Net income has, however, dropped 63 percent since Q1 2011, with cost per user up 16 percent compared the same period last year. MetroPCS puts down to "retention expense" and the roll-out of its 4G network. The fifth biggest US carrier added over 131,000 new subscribers, but growth continues to slide - it's down from 190,000 in Q4 2012.

NZXT is pretty good when it comes to avoiding unnecessary flourishes and providing straight-up PC hardware. Its Cryo E40 laptop cooler is no different, forgoing HDD slots and magic elixirs in favor of two 80mm fans that clasp magnetically to the underside of its steel mesh. These can be plucked off and moved around to suit your lappie's particular hotspots - so long as you're using a 15-incher or smaller. The E40 rises to 60mm above the surface of your desk, covers an area 420mm wide by 300mm deep, and is powered via a USB cable that can also be shifted to the left or right to suit your ports.

The Japanese automaker has knocked together 22 minutes of behind-the-scenes chats with the engineers who made the BRZ to show you how they did it, and how they managed to pack all of the handling and safety bits around the fun bits.

New software can easily unlock any iPhone

. Apple's fifth-generation iPhone 4S can now be SIM-unlocked in just a few easy steps, as can any previous version of Apple's popular smartphone line. As for that color, we aren't sure how we feel about it just yet, granted, we'll want to see it in person and without all of the hastily bolted-together panel gaps of this prototype.
