Dump truck is rescued by bulldozer... badly

Dump truck is rescued by bulldozer... badly

There are all sorts of cliches for a situation like this. Phrases like "out of the frying pan and into the fire," or "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" all seem apt. We aren't exactly sure where the video above comes from, but in it, a front-end loader successfully rights a tipped-over dump truck. It's what happens after the fallen hauler puts its wheels to the pavement that things get messy once again. We won't ruin the surprise for you, but we will say the clip is a good advertisement for planning ahead.

AT&T training document suggests ISPs are gearing up to beat piracy with internet restrictions

The fact that ISPs are working with the RIAA in a bid to squash piracy is far from new. A leaked document claiming to be AT&T training materials, however, suggests that the operator is about to stop talking, and start doing. According to TorrentFreak notifications will be sent out to customers on November 28th about the change in policy, with those suspected of illicit downloads receiving an email alerting them of the possible copyright infringement. We'd previously heard of a six-stage notification system, and this, too, is mentioned here with repeat offenders facing access to "many of the most frequently visited websites" restricted.

Jays a-JAYS Four earphones review

In the past several weeks, I have been reviewing speakers and headphones, but I am back doing some earphones. I had forgotten - for a short while - how important a good seal is. Unless you have a near-perfect fit, you can kiss any bass goodbye. Such is the case with the Jays a-JAYS Four earphones. After trying all five sizes of supplied tips, I just couldn't get a decent seal, thus little bass. Maybe it's my ears, who knows? So I attached my go-to tips I have used in other reviews and ...

Apple, other thin laptop makers pass latest round of EPEAT tests after summer mini-drama

Apple, other thin laptop makers pass latest round of EPEAT tests after summer mini-drama

Apple gave eco-friendly computer fans a brief jolt this July after it backed out of EPEAT certification, only to restore most devices just days later. While we can't say we're completely shocked at the follow-up, EPEAT has confirmed that at least one "ultra-thin" laptop from Apple has just cleared the verification process. The as yet unnamed system is more likely to be a Mac that had already earned the recycling-friendly rating in the past, such as the MacBook Air, rather than a sudden turnaround for the MacBook Pro with Retina Display.

T-Mobile's holiday roadmap leaked: LG Optimus L9, HTC Windows PhoneX spotted

According to a leaked roadmap on TMoNews, the magenta carrier appears to have a few tantalizing offerings coming its way this holiday season. A curious BlackBerry handheld dubbed the Armstrong, a color refresh of the Samsung Galaxy S II, a possibly Android-flavored Huawei Summit and the LG Optimus L9 are all slated to launch just on or before Halloween. Going into the next month, we see the HTC Windows PhoneX making the pre-Thanksgiving cut with a potential debut of November 14th. Notably absent are the Samsung Galaxy Note II and the Nokia Lumia 810, but that doesn't mean they won't be there when December rolls around.

Will this contraption become the world's fastest baby stroller?

Will this contraption become the world's fastest baby stroller?

Everyone has to have a niche, we suppose. That would explain Colin Furze. The UK man claims a Guinness World Record for largest bonfire (2006), longest motorcycle (2008) and fastest mobility scooter (2010). So it seems that Furze is set on knocking off obscure world records, and his latest attempt might be the most creative yet.
Furze has built a muscled-up and modified pram (Yankee translation: baby stroller) that reaches speeds previously unfathomable in the world of infant transportation. The stroller has a 10-horsepower motor and four gears, and it looks mighty fast.

Alleged LG Nexus 4 reviewed by Belarusian tech site

Well, the Belarusian tech site Onliner.by made waves yesterday by publishing the clearest photos yet of the alleged LG Nexus, the E960. Now the site has published a quick and dirty review of the unannounced phone, which may go down as one of the worst kept secrets in smartphone history. An editor at the site claims to have scored a prototype version of the handset, and as such, any judgements made should be taken with a grain of salt. There were plenty of bugs, including serious issues with Android Beam, which in our experience has never really worked as well as advertised anyway.

ASUS' TAICHI convertible laptop hits the FCC

If 2012 was the year of the Ultrabook, 2013's going to be remembered by the massive proliferation of laptop / tablet hybrids. One such convertible that's just been given full marks by the FCC is ASUS' TAICHI, an 11.6 or 13.3-inch unit that's packing an Ivy Bridge Core i7, 4GB RAM and, most notably, a display on both sides of its lid. While there's no official word from the company on a launch date, now that the government has given a thumbs up, it can't be too much further out.

Nikon announces event for 24th of October – Nikon 1 V2 to be announced then?

So we more or less know that the Nikon 1 V2 will be announced, but when exactly remains to be seen - at least until now. It seems that Nikon has started to send out invites to an event which will be taking place on the 24th of October. It was not stated as to what the event will be about, although given that previous rumors have suggested that the Nikon 1 V2 will be Nikon's next announcement, we guess we will be surprised if the announcement is for something else.

Sprint Discusses Possible Acquisition with Softbank

Feeling the need to boost its high-speed LTE network that falls behind Verizon and AT&T, Sprint is reportedly in talks with one of Japan's largest wireless carriers of a possible takeover. The third-largest carrier in the United States, with over 56 million subscribers, said that Softbank is considering a “substantial investment” in the company, which would give Sprint much-needed capital. The announcement comes after reports that T-Mobile, owned by Germany-based Deutsche Telekom, would merge with regional carrier MetroPCS, which Sprint tried to take over earlier this year.

Apple files patent application for fingerprint sensor that can be transparent or opaque

While Apple has flirted with biometric-based patents before, we've yet to see them implemented in real-world technology. That hasn't stopped it from filing yet another one though, as the latest application reveals a fingerprint sensor apparently embedded into the iPhone itself. The patent describes a hardware "window" that can become selectively "transparent or opaque." When transparent, it would reveal a component comprised of an "image capture device, a strobe flash, a biometric sensor, a light sensor, a proximity sensor, or a solar panel, or a combination thereof" as a method of unlocking the phone.

Samsung has just days to go before the Series 5 Slate (and ATIV Smart PC) arrives hand-in-hand with the official launch of Windows 8, so we're surprised that it's been waiting so long to clear the usual regulatory hurdles in the US. Just in the nick of time, though, the 11-inch tablet has passed by the FCC for approval. There's no hidden surprises to go with the testing - this is the regular Series 5 with Bluetooth and dual-band WiFi, but no visible NFC or the AT&T model's LTE. As such, we're more curious about when Samsung's Series 7 Slate and Series 5 Ultra Touch reach the FCC's doors.

The PS Vita has one novelty that other handheld consoles cannot claim to carry – touch controls located at the back of it, although you can say that Nintendo did innovate far more on the portable console landscape than Sony did with the introduction of dual displays, and a touchscreen at that. Well, Canopy's most recent Sensus iPhone case is one that introduces touch controls at the back of the phone, in addition to the sides to boot. PS Vita sales surpass 1 million mark in Japan

Sony's most recent handheld console, the PS Vita, has finally passed the 1 million sales mark in its home country, Japan. This might sound impressive to some, but when you take into consideration previous handheld consoles, it is a rather dismal figures. Taking its own sweet time of 42 weeks to arrive at the sales milestone, the PS Vita was lagging behind its predecessor, the PlayStation Portable (PSP) and its rival for the moment, the Nintendo 3DS. When you contrast it with the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo's dual screen handheld took a mere 13 weeks to pass the 1 million mark, while the Sony PSP required an additional week compared to the 3DS.

. Major League Baseball is a big fan of Apple (AAPL) when it comes to the company's Passbook application in iOS 6. In the final two weeks of the regular season, four teams tested Passbook and found that fans were quick to utilize the service. Out of all e-ticket buyers, 1,500, or 12%, chose to receive their tickets through Passbook when given the opportunity, Market Watch reported. “That adoption rate really floored us - there is no question our fans want digital tickets," CEO of MLB Advance Media Bob Bowman said.

. To say consumers, carriers and analysts are raving about the iPhone 5 would be an understatement. Apple's (AAPL) flagship smartphone has been met with near universal praise from consumers and has sold out across nearly all networks. Sales may remain at bay, however, as consumers continue to spend money on tablets and smartphones.

"There was great hope through the first half that 2012 would prove to be a rebound year for the PC market," said Craig Stice, senior principal analyst for computer systems at IHS.

MIT pencils in carbon nanotube gas sensor that's cheaper, less hazardous (video)

Carbon nanotube-based sensors are good at sniffing out all kinds of things, but applying the cylindrical molecules to a substrate has traditionally been a dangerous and unreliable process. Now, researchers at MIT have found a way to avoid the hazardous solvents that are currently used, by compressing commercially available nanotube powders into a pencil lead-shaped material. That allowed them to sketch the material directly onto paper imprinted with gold electrodes (as shown above), then measure the current flowing through the resisting carbon nanotubes - allowing detection of any gases that stick to the material.

Nokia Lumia 810 for T-Mobile hands-on

T-Mobile's not being shy in its selection of Windows Phone 8 offerings, so far announcing plans to release the HTC Windows Phone 8X, 8S and Nokia Lumia 810, but unfortunately it does have to be shy in actually showing them off. The carrier's booth at tonight's MobileCon 2012-related event had the latter device, but wasn't able to turn it on for us (a situation that we've sadly come to expect with virtually every public appearance by a WP8 device). Technically, the 810 is being dubbed a T-Mobile "exclusive" in the US, but that takes on very little meaning when given its use of a AWS-friendly HSPA+ 42Mbps radio.
