Nielsen: Smartphones account for nearly 50 percent of US mobile phones as of February

Nielsen Mobile Insights' latest statistics are in — and would you look at that. It's the rise of smartphone owners crossing paths with the decline of those still clinging to their feature-focused devices. According to its latest Smartphone Penetration report, through February 2012, 49.7 percent of US mobile phone owners now sport the “smarter” types (up from only 36 percent a year ago). On an unsurprising note, Nielsen also found that two-thirds of mobile phone buyers in the last three months purchased smartphones over dumbphones.

McLaren delivers 25 MP4-12C GT3s to customer racing teams for 2012 racing season [w/videos]

When a McLaren hits the race track, the competition had better watch out. The British outfit is, after all, one of the most successful in Formula One, having won 176 grands prix, a dozen drivers' championships and eight constructors' titles. But McLaren's prowess extends beyond F1. The Woking firm was a force to be reckoned with in Can-Am in the late 60s, and the last time it built an endurance racing sportscar – the famed F1 GTR back in 1995 – it trounced even the advanced prototype racers to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Now, McLaren is back in the sportscar racing game with the new MP4-12C GT3.

Sony pushes back ICS updates rollout to mid-April

Sony warmed the hearts of its fans by announcing the company's Ice Cream Sandwich update roll-out plans back in December last year. Sadly, the wait will take a bit longer than expected, as the company has announced the Xperia Arc S, Neo V and Ray updates will be pushed back to mid-April. Previously, the company promised the aforementioned devices will get their serving of ICS in March, but the development is going behind schedule and that's not going to happen.

Sony to launch NEX-FS700E 4K cinema camera for $9,000 at NAB?

What would you pay for the ability to capture cinema quality 4K video. $36,000. $18,000. Try $9,000. That's the expected price of Sony's rumored NEX-FS700E, which could launch at NAB next month with a June ship date. EOSHD reports that the camera will pipe 4K video to a dedicated external recorder over 3G HD-SDI. It will reportedly use the same NEX E-mount as its predecessor, the FS100, and may include a trio of neutral density filters to increase versatility.

If you've enjoyed decrypting the often frustratingly skewed (and occasionally humorously juxtaposed) reCAPTCHAs, you might be a bit sad to learn that Google is mixing things up with some rather more boring numerals. The combinations of two words are typically used as part of a registration form to ensure the registrant is, indeed, human. Google is now replacing one of the words in some of its reCAPTCHA forms with photos gleaned from Street View service.

Okay, it's only 3 months till your glorious 21st birthday, so near, yet technology has to come along and rain on your parade. You might think you look legal, but if claims by engineers at Face.com are to be believed, they're not having it. Using the firm's face recognition technology and a new API, they believe it can determine age based on a photo. The technology is open to all developers who might want to add age restriction into their apps, although it's unlikely that you would want to rely on this as your sole method of verification.

Something strange has brewed over at the Asurion website. The enrollment form, the one people use to apply for replacement devices, seems to have one “DROID Bionic 2″ listed underneath Motorola phones. This name hasn’t been in the rumor mill at all until now, and Droid-Life makes a pretty good point that the Motorola Droid RAZR has multiple entries for different colors, and the DROID Bionic does technically come in two versions -  one without a 16GB microSD card and a retired one with a microSD card. The “Bionic 2″ could refer to that.

The slate was seen as a fantastic product that could serve as a digital notebook on top of a standard media tablet, but Microsoft would later confirm that work on the Courier was being discontinued. A new iPad app was made available this week that resurrects the spirit of the Courier however, and it's easy to see why: the team behind Paper by FiftyThree includes several people who once worked on the Courier project at Microsoft.

There are obvious exterior differences, such as the Ampera's "boomerang" headlights and Opel badging, but inside, the only noticeable difference is another Opel badge on the steering wheel.
