HTC talks smartphone design: from inception to final product

At the Frequencies media summit in Seattle over the last two days, HTC walked us through the fine details on how its smartphones are developed, going from the boring rectangular ABS block to the more refined plastic mockups that are presented to carriers and focus groups - the findings of which then shape the final product. Sadly, we weren't allowed to take photos of the One X mockups that were shown to us, but do read on to learn the general process of how an HTC phone goes from inception to the final product. An HTC phone starts out somewhere between four months and a year before reaching to the ABS block mockup stage.

Qualcomm's S4 Mobile Processors in Short Supply

Qualcomm has announced that it underestimated the demand for its new S4 processor for use in mobile devices like tablets and smartphones. Apparently, the increase in adoption of mobile devices to Qualcomm's S4 Snapdragon chipset line is creating shortages that the company might not have the capacity to handle until the end of the year. The chipset can be found on devices like the HTC One X. Reports have stated that the shortage will most likely affect Android smartphones, Windows Phone and Windows 8 ARM systems that rely on ARM architecture.

OScan a Smartphone Based Screening Device for Oral Cancer

Researchers from Stanford have come up with the means of detecting oral cancer with a nifty little invention called OScan. The device which is attached to a smartphone enables earlier diagnosis of the presence of lesions which are early symptoms of oral cancer. Due to the lack of dentists or nurses in certain areas routine check-ups can be difficult and with this in mind, Manu Prakash who is an assistant professor of bioengineering at Stanford engineered the device which works hand in hand with a smartphone to create detailed images of the oral cavity after which it is screened for lesions that might be suspicious.

Mercedes-Benz has been kind enough to give us all a glimpse of the company's 2013 G63 AMG ahead of the super SUV's debut at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show. A 5.5-liter AMG-built twin-turbo V8 engine lurks behind the updated face, complete with a heady 544 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque. The direct-injection engine is also laden with fuel-saving gear, including a start/stop system and an intelligent alternator that only charges the vehicle's electrical system when needed. We're guessing the tech may help move the boxy Geländewagen's fuel economy from supremely abysmal to merely exceptionally atrocious.

iPhone sales to continue declining until ‘iPhone 5′ launch, Canaccord says

. Sales of Apple's popular iPhone line of smartphones will continue to decline until the next-generation model launches later this year according to one analyst. Mike Walkley of Canaccord Genuity on Thursday raised his price target on shares of Apple stock to $740, reiterating a Buy rating. Walkley believes that Apple will post strong results for the second fiscal quarter ended in March, however he lowered his EPS estimates for fiscal 2012 to $43.13 from $44.58. Read on for more.

Dundee University invents Dr Who Sonic Screwdriver

Those of you who follow the good doctor's adventures on the TV (Dr Who, who else. Pardon the pun though) will most probably wished to have the Sonic Screwdriver at one time or another, and perhaps truth is stranger than fiction as researchers over at Dundee University have managed to come up with a real life version which would make for a very passable Dr Who Sonic Screwdriver. This particular device will rely on ultrasound to lift and rotate a rubber disc that floats in a cylinder of water, and marks the first time (according to the University) that ultrasound waves have been used to turn objects instead of just pushing them.

Windows Store slowly going global, 26 country specific markets launching with next update

The Windows Store, though still very much in the trial stage, is already growing - and not just in terms of catalog size. At launch, alongside the consumer preview of Windows 8, the Store was only accepting submissions from devs in five different countries and had region specific markets to match. With the next preview release of its upcoming OS, though, Microsoft plans to expand that greatly. Soon enough 33 more nations will be open to submitting apps and the number of country-specific store fronts will jump from five to 26.

Pininfarina Cambiano carved from wood for furniture show

You may remember the Pininfarina Cambiano as the creation that walked away with the honor of being named the most beautiful concept at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. The design house decided to commemorate the honor by crafting something else special for the 2012 Milan Furniture Show. Pininfarina turned to the craftsmen at Riva 1920 to put together a wood sculpture in the Cambiano's image.

A quick stop by the Intel pavilion here at NAB 2012 revealed our friends from Ceton hiding within, and even though we just saw the Q DVR and Echo companion extender on our last trip to Vegas a few months ago, there's a few new items to show already. As shown above, the mobile companion app that we had only seen so far on Windows Phone 7 is also up and running on Android and iOS. While the apps are still very early in their development they're already running smoothly with metadata provided by Rovi and the usual set of features for DVR scheduling and management.

BMW, Rolls-Royce issue recall over smoldering circuit boards

Drivers of 2010-2011 Rolls Royce Ghost models and several BMW models with turbocharged engines need to get their vehicles to their dealers. The cars are being recalled for a potentially hazardous defect that could turn their high-end autos into smoldering hunks of less luxurious melted plastic and steel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the circuit boards on the cars' water pump could overheat and possibly catch fire.
The 2011 BMW models affected are the 5 Series and 5 Series Gran Turismo. 2012 models are the 6 Series, 7 Series, X5 and X6. All affected models have either the turbocharged V8 or V12.

Nokia Lumia devices not generating sales in Europe, say carriers; Would be doing better with Android

The Finnish company Nokia seems to be getting rounds of disapproval from major European carriers. According to Reuters, carriers are not satisfied with the Windows Phone 7-based Lumia line's presence due to low sales. They cite lack of adequate marketing by Nokia, glitchy devices, and more as reasons why “no one comes into the store and asks for a Windows Phone,” as told by an executive at one of these carriers. That same executive says Nokia could sell a lot more Lumia devices if they'd gone with Android instead of Windows Phone.

It's a bad problem for Nokia to have.

BMW owners twice as likely to be adulterers as drivers of other brands

We're not so sure how scientific its poll was, but an online dating service that calls itself the U.K.'s largest for married people says that men who cheat on their wives are twice as likely to drive a BMW than any other brand of car. According to NineMSN.com, Illicit Encounters points to the “intrinsic link between success and cheating” to explain the connection between Bimmers and adultery. Some 19 percent of the dating website's members drive a BMW, including 11 percent of the women who responded to the survey, according to the report. Coming in second on the survey was Audi, with Mercedes-Benz a close third.

We've already seen Nokia 808 PureView pre-orders pop up elsewhere but now we're talking the UK. Clove.co.uk now offers the ultra-high-megapixel cameraphone but the pricetag is a bit harder to swallow than the one we saw from Nokia Italy. With the VAT included, the UK price amounts to £538.80, which is roughly €655, while Nokia Italy's asking price is €599.
We hope other UK retailers chime in on that one and make a more palatable offer for the Nokia 808.

Two of the world's most hallowed libraries are about to get even quieter, having been given $3 million to go with the flow and put some of their oldest collections online. The Vatican Library and Oxford University's Bodleian Library will together offer up 1.5 million pages of hoary text, including Gutenberg's Latin Bible from the 15th Century, a 1,200-year-old Hebrew codex called the "Sifra," and enough Greek philosophy to make even Homer seem succinct.

It seems that a select bunch of Nokia Lumia 710 and Lumia 800 smartphones that run on the Windows Phone platform has shipped, carrying unlocked bootloaders on them so that those with a more adventurous spirit will be able to load custom ROMs on their respective handsets. This particular error was discovered by biktor_gj on XDA Developers, and it is most probably human error that this happened, in Nokia's perceived rush to release those two smartphones to the market.

Sony is moving towards the possible commercializing of a next-generation optical disc archive storage system known as the Optical Disc Archive. Not only that, Sony wants to set up an Optical Disc Archive Advisory Group in order to promote the adoption of this new storage format, targeting different companies in related industries.
