Want a cheap, off-contract phone, and live within the MetroPCS coverage area. Then the Optimus M+ might interest you quite a bit. For $129, you get the Gingerbread phone with a 3.5-inch HVGA screen, 5-megapixel rear-facing camera, 800MHz processor, 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, GPS, Bluetooth 3.0 and a microSD memory card slot. HTC talks smartphone design: from inception to final product

HTC talks smartphone design: from inception to final product

At the Frequencies media summit in Seattle over the last two days, HTC walked us through the fine details on how its smartphones are developed, going from the boring rectangular ABS block to the more refined plastic mockups that are presented to carriers and focus groups - the findings of which then shape the final product. Sadly, we weren't allowed to take photos of the One X mockups that were shown to us, but do read on to learn the general process of how an HTC phone goes from inception to the final product. An HTC phone starts out somewhere between four months and a year before reaching to the ABS block mockup stage.

Recent reports in the same vein have indicated that instead of an August roll-out, Samsung is rumored to introduce the service alongside the upcoming flagship product, Samsung Galaxy S III which is allegedly launching in London on May 3rd.

Qualcomm has announced that it underestimated the demand for its new S4 processor for use in mobile devices like tablets and smartphones. Apparently, the increase in adoption of mobile devices to Qualcomm's S4 Snapdragon chipset line is creating shortages that the company might not have the capacity to handle until the end of the year. Thought your SATA SSD chugged along real nice. Think again. Fusion-io has just released an SDK that will allow developers to bypass all the speed draining bottlenecks that rob NAND memory of its true potential (i.e. the kernel block I/O layer,) and tap directly into the memory itself. In fact, Fusion-io is so confident of its products abilities, it prefers to call them ioMemory Application Accelerators, rather than SSDs. The SDK allows developers native access to the ioMemory, meaning applications can benefit from the kind of hardware integration you might get from a proprietary platform.

OScan a Smartphone Based Screening Device for Oral Cancer

Researchers from Stanford have come up with the means of detecting oral cancer with a nifty little invention called OScan. The device which is attached to a smartphone enables earlier diagnosis of the presence of lesions which are early symptoms of oral cancer. Due to the lack of dentists or nurses in certain areas routine check-ups can be difficult and with this in mind, Manu Prakash who is an assistant professor of bioengineering at Stanford engineered the device which works hand in hand with a smartphone to create detailed images of the oral cavity after which it is screened for lesions that might be suspicious.

Mercedes-Benz has been kind enough to give us all a glimpse of the company's 2013 G63 AMG ahead of the super SUV's debut at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show. A 5.5-liter AMG-built twin-turbo V8 engine lurks behind the updated face, complete with a heady 544 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque. The direct-injection engine is also laden with fuel-saving gear, including a start/stop system and an intelligent alternator that only charges the vehicle's electrical system when needed. We're guessing the tech may help move the boxy Geländewagen's fuel economy from supremely abysmal to merely exceptionally atrocious.

Tesla pairs up with SolarCity, will power off-grid homes as well as cars

If you've ever dreamed of thumbing your nose at big energy and its expensive, polluting ways, then Tesla and a solar panel leasing company called SolarCity might be taking you a baby-step closer to reality. Although recognized mostly for its EVs, Tesla reckons it knows enough about batteries to solve a key problem in the solar energy chain — namely the storage of power for use when the sun, power grid, or both go offline. The battery design, consisting of many laptop-style lithium ion batteries stacked together, was chosen after two years of research and a $1.8 million energy grant.

The Windows Store, though still very much in the trial stage, is already growing - and not just in terms of catalog size. At launch, alongside the consumer preview of Windows 8, the Store was only accepting submissions from devs in five different countries and had region specific markets to match. With the next preview release of its upcoming OS, though, Microsoft plans to expand that greatly. Soon enough 33 more nations will be open to submitting apps and the number of country-specific store fronts will jump from five to 26.

Our colleagues at Consumer Reports, when not professing their love for all things Toyota, have recently taken a real shine to Subarus. First they crowned the 2012 Impreza the top small sedan, while elevating the Subaru brand to the top of the 2012 CR ratings. Now comes this surprisingly entertaining "first look" video featuring the 2013 BRZ. CR loved hot-shoeing the BRZ around the track, of course. As we've seen, this car is fun enough that anyone with a pulse should be able to enjoy it. But more importantly, the magazine answered a few important questions about the car's suitability for the low-budget racing crowd.

The Finnish company Nokia seems to be getting rounds of disapproval from major European carriers. According to Reuters, carriers are not satisfied with the Windows Phone 7-based Lumia line's presence due to low sales. They cite lack of adequate marketing by Nokia, glitchy devices, and more as reasons why “no one comes into the store and asks for a Windows Phone,” as told by an executive at one of these carriers. That same executive says Nokia could sell a lot more Lumia devices if they'd gone with Android instead of Windows Phone.
