Study: 1 in 5 US residents do not have access to the internet, smartphones breaking through social classes

. People of my generation had the chance to experience what I like to call the Big Tech Bang. This made-up term refers to the beginning of the communications era. I remember the days when even house phones were a luxury. We used to play games outdoors (not video games), and actually knew every kid in the neighborhood.

Things have changed since then. We no longer need to go to the library, and anyone and anything is reachable with the press of a few buttons. Most of the younger generations can no longer see a world without internet.

Sharp rolls out high-res IGZO LCDs destined for tablets, laptops and monitors

Well, a week (or two) is a long time in the technology industry, and despite that joint venture with Sony heading south, it's not all bad news for Sharp. According to a press release from the panel maker, it has begun production of the world's first screens based on IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) technology. These screens are said to promise twice the detail as existing panels of similar transparency, which also translates into a hefty 90 percent reduction in power consumption, reports PC World.

Republic Wireless opening up reservation system next week in advance of summer beta program

We've already known that Republic Wireless was planning to reopen the beta program for its hybrid WiFi / cellular service this summer, and the company has now finally detailed exactly how that beta will take place. For starters, it'll only be open to those who have already signed up to the company's email list or tried to place an order when that option was available last November, but that's still not a guarantee to get in.

Google's doing a lot to bolster its Android developers guide at the moment, with fresh design tips and then a new section on accessibility arriving shortly after. The latter provides a bunch of suggestions on things like minimum button size (48dp or around 9mm), and also explains how to make use of free components like TalkBack, which gives a spoken description of an app's UI, and Eyes-Free Keyboard, which many users find easier than regular touch-to-click.

Boeing To Manufacture Secure Android Handsets For US Government And Defense Sectors

With Android being “open sourced” and all that, it pretty much means just about anyone can grab Google's code and put it on a device of their choosing. That's probably why the US government took a liking to the platform over rival mobile OS's, and has commissioned a secure Android device from the unlikeliest of manufacturers — aerospace corporation — Boeing. Believe it or not but Boeing also specializes in defense and security, which makes them the perfect OEM to manufacturer the nation's most secure Android handset for our military officials.

Apple publishes support page for Flashback malware, is working on a fix

After the Flashback / Flashfake Mac trojan was exposed by Russian site Dr. Web, Apple has finally responded by publishing a support page about the issue and promising a fix. If you haven't heard by now, the malware exploits a flaw in the Java Virtual Machine, which Oracle pushed a fix for back in February, but Apple didn't patch until a botnet consisting of as many as 650,000 Macs was identified on March 4th. Antivirus maker Kaspersky has confirmed the earlier findings, and released a free tool affected users can run to remove the trojan from their computers.

As we know, electric cars are extremely good for the environment and as technology advances, they are slowly becoming as efficient if not more efficient than its petrol guzzling counterparts. Even then, electric vehicles have their own share of problems. The first one is the strain of a large quantity of electric cars being charged at the same time on the power grid. Fortunately, yet another joint development has come forth in the electrical transportation industry. IBM, Honda and PG&E have come together to create a smart charging system that will help power providers like PG&E optimize the power demand needed.

Nokia managed to sell over 2 million Lumia Windows Phones during the first quarter of this year. That compares favorably to the 500,000-700,000 we estimated it sold during the fourth quarter of 2011. However, the Q4 2011 number was achieved over just 7 weeks (since the Lumias started selling during the quarter). Also note that the heavily marketed Nokia Lumia 900 only started selling in Q2, so those device's sales aren't part of these numbers.

1968 Alfa Romeo T33x2 Daytona racing to the auction block in Monaco

By the early 1950s, Alfa Romeo had grown tired of dominating (and spending huge sums of money on) grand prix racing, and shut down its program. Along with it, a program to develop a small-displacement two-liter V8 was aborted. But Alfa couldn't keep away from racing altogether for very long, and by the early 60s the factory noticed that its customers were competing in endurance sportscar races and set about fielding its own works effort. Development of the high-revving 2.0-liter V8 picked up again, finding its way into a variety of prototypes and GTs, but this was arguably the most alluring.

Not so long ago, Kensington took that idea and applied it to a cable that was designed to secure your laptop. Now we have another product that uses this basic same idea. It's the Rock Lock for your guitar. It's made in the USA of heavy-duty braided steel cable and a special locking clamp that fits across the guitar neck like a capo. The Rock Lock's clamp has a 2-1x8″ wide by 7x8″ tall opening that has been designed to work with most 6 string acoustic and electric guitars.

India now has more than 911 million mobile subscribers, trying to catch up with China

There's a race going on in the developing world. It's the race to add as many mobile users in as little time as possible, and it's being fought by the world's two most populous countries, China and India.
