Microsoft CEO: 500,000 Windows 8 downloads in less than 12 hours

Did you download Microsoft's latest Windows 8 developer preview ISO. Microsoft made available the preview few days ago at their BUILD conference, and well according to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer himself, who took to the stage at Build, the download managed to hit about 500,000 downloads in the first 12 hours. That sounded about right.

Windows 8 Store to sell both Metro-style apps and conventional Win32 programs

Windows 8 Store to sell both Metro-style apps and conventional Win32 programs

Microsoft just revealed a little info about the future functionality of Windows Store at Build 2011. In keeping with its mantra of making Windows 8 a one-size-fits-all affair, the Store will be home to both Metro-style apps (useful for tablets and desktops alike) as well as traditional Win32 programs. The outfit is hoping for this to provide more visibility for the programs that we all grew up on, and so long as the categorization is under control, we're all for it. Not surprising, given that there's “no overlay” here.

Top Gear Australia cancelled

Top Gear Australia cancelled

Apparently, even with a proven script, replicating the success of the most beloved automotive show on television isn't as easy as it sounds. According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the Australian version of Top Gear has been cancelled. After the initial report, host Steve Pizzati sent out a confirmation via Twitter stating the following:.
It's true – as of next week, TGA will be on at the special time of not at all. Sorry to the open-minded people that gave it a go and enjoyed!

For those keeping track, Top Gear down under lasted for four seasons spread over two different networks before finally succumbing to poor ratings.

Samsung Wave 3 to be released in October

Samsung Wave 3 to be released in October

Samsung's next generation bada phone, the Samsung Wave 3, wasn't given a release date when it was announced together with the Wave M and Wave Y phones last month. But today at the bada developer day in India, a Samsung executive confirmed a release date for the Wave 3. The Samsung Wave 3 will be released in Europe sometime next month. No word on a US release date, but seeing how the previous Wave phones never made it to our shores, it's highly unlikely we'll see the Wave 3 - but there's always a first for everything.

How to fish a Ferrari Enzo out of the ocean

How to fish a Ferrari Enzo out of the ocean

We reported earlier today that a rare Ferrari Enzo went off course yesterday while running the 2011 Targa Newfoundland and wound up swimming with the fishes in the Atlantic. We even had a video showing what happened leading up to the Ferrari's off-road and then underwater excursion. We didn't, however, have many pictures, but Autoblog reader Renee had a father on the scene who took these pictures for us of what happened immediately after. When a car takes a dive like that, you've got to fish it out.

Clearwire announces deal with China Mobile to accelerate TD-LTE deployment

The world's largest mobile operator and the heretofore scrappy WiMAX provider have linked arms to accelerate the rollout and adoption of time-division LTE (TD-LTE) across China. While there's little chatter about an infrastructure build-up itself, China Mobile and Clearwire have established an agreement "to cultivate a robust device ecosystem that supports multi-mode, multi-band devices with minimum component complexity and cost," with particular emphasis on the common 2.5GHz spectrum. More specifically, the collaboration will work to build up a high volume of TD-LTE chipsets and devices for commercial availability in 2012.

RIM's Q2 results are out, seem disappointing

RIM's Q2 results are out, seem disappointing

RIM has posted the financial results for the second fiscal quarter of the year, which in their case are the three months ending on August 27th. Things are definitely not as good as the company expected with the sales of the PlayBook tablet being particularly disappointing. Just 200,000 units of the QNX-based slate were shipped over the past three months, a number that is even lower than that forecasts from yesterday suggested.

Square Enix Set to Bring Classic RPG Chrono Trigger to Android

Square Enix Set to Bring Classic RPG Chrono Trigger to Android

The Tokyo Game Show is going on and while we didn't expect much coming out of Android, Square Enix had a few biggies to drop. They've revealed they'll be bringing classic Super Nintendo RPG Chrono Trigger (one of my personal favorites) to Android. We're also getting Dragon Quest Monsters and Ithadaki Street, likened to Pokemon and Monopoly. We hope these will make their way out of Japan, but they didn't give any insight into where these would be released. They simultaneously announced their own marketplace for Android but it looks like that one won't make it too far out of the east.

Magic-Pro ProMini BT-Joy Bluetooth Keyboard Review

I like keyboards; I like big, full-sized keyboards like my Logitech G15 on down to my one-handed Lenovo N5902 Multimedia Remote. I could barely play “Chopsticks” on the piano and when it comes to 0n-screen keyboards. I'm all thumbs…in the wrong way. We have three tablets in our home (Apple iPad, Asus Transformer and HP TouchPad), all of them are paired with keyboards that make typing anything over a few words much more pleasant.
There's a trade-off to carrying a physical keyboard though, and that's the added size and weight.

iPhone 5 claimed to be “weeks away” from announcement

The iPhone 5 is just “weeks away” from being announced according to a tipster who recently leaked some details to the New York Times. The tipster claimed to be an Apple employee (who as usual, wished to remain anonymous) who wasn't allowed to speak publicly for the company. In addition to leaking a vague announcement date, the alleged Apple employee gave some other details about the phone. The tipster mentioned that the iPhone 5 will feature an 8-megapixel camera and a faster A5 dual-core processor but we all knew those upgrades were coming anyway. Other than that, there wasn't any new information to be added to the rumor mill.

Samsung Overtakes Apple in Smartphone Sales [Europe]

Samsung Overtakes Apple in Smartphone Sales [Europe]

According to IDC, Samsung has surpassed Apple in European smartphone sales by shipping 4.8 Million units, compared to Apple's 4.6M units. Samsung had a strong momentum before, but clearly, the Samsung Galaxy S2 should get the credit for this (read our Samsung Galaxy S2 review). HTC stands at the third spot, and you can easily understand why every player is fighting with the gloves off: Apple sues Samsung, and HTC countersuing Apple while Google is arming HTC with patents. It is a bit surprising that Samsung has overtaken Apple so quickly.

The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe is going racing, and it has its eyes set on conquering the DTM series. That means the standard C-class Coupe gets the typical DTM outfit of a massive front splitter, seductively wide fender flares and a wing large enough on which to throw a party fit for Dance-centrum in Stuttgart. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe DTM AMG was introduced to the Frankfurt Motor Show crowds by racing greats Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg. It is a fitting reception considering the amount of wins Schumacher has, and just how German Rosberg is.

Belkin Tablet Kitchen Accessories

Belkin Tablet Kitchen Accessories

It is clear that tablets can be great kitchen computers, but most people also like to preserve space on their counter tops. To solve this problem, Belkin has released a fridge mount for iPad 2 and a cabinet mount for 7″ to 10″ tablets (it is compatible with cases too). Both mounts don't require any tools or drilling, as the cabinet mount uses a simple clip mechanism, while the fridge mount is simply “taped” on the fridge with a super-strong, although not permanent, adhesive.

Infiniti shows us what winning looks like with Red Bull F1 mockup

To say that Red Bull has found success in Formula One would be a gross understatement. The energy drink concern bought its way into the pinnacle of motorsports and, after several seasons of building up the team that started life as Stewart Grand Prix and then became Jaguar Racing, has already secured itself both championship titles and is well on its way to repeating the feat. That's the kind of success that Infiniti – whose sister company Renault provides Red Bull's engines – is keen to tap into.

What will the iPhone 5 look like. We've read plenty of reports that the iPhone 5 will offer a larger display and a thinner design, and we have seen leaked silicone cases that seem to back those reports up. The latest leak also reinforces earlier suggestions that the iPhone 5 will also have a larger home button. Ukwire.hk released images of a new screen protector that shows a wider home button below the iPhone 5 display. In a second image, included after the break, an iPhone 4 is placed face-down on top of the screen protector to illustrate the potential size difference between the two devices.

As if getting a Kindle at a reduced price wasn't good enough with Amazon's Kindle with Special Offers, customers of the eBook reader are in for another treat. Amazon has just announced that customers will soon start receiving special offers from AmazonLocal on their Kindle screensavers when they aren't reading (I don't believe Amazon would make deals pop up while you were reading anyway - that would be annoying). Apparently if you live in Taiwan, there will be no over the air update for your Windows Phone, via Zune or any other means. You have to run down to your local HTC dealer right now, and get your phone flashed to Mango. Initially the Mango update is available for the HTC Mozart, and the HTC HD7, obviously the two carrier supported devices on the island. [Being the home of HTC, you might think there would be a larger range.] or they can download the RUU's and update independently, obviously a hidden link at this point.

Sharp Cuts Back Galapagos Tablet Line, Will Continue to Sell 7-Inch Only

Sharp is putting all of their eggs in a 7-inch basket as low sales have resulted in the discontinuation of their 5.5-inch and 10.8-inch Galapagos tablets. Two of three Galapagos models, the tablets were introduced to Japan last December and followed by a 7-inch Honeycomb slate last month. Sharp today confirmed that it would cease taking orders for the two older models on September 30th. Sharp is struggling to move tablets in light of the Apple iPad's market dominance, a scenario not uncommon to manufacturers of Android-based slates around the globe.

Google has scored another milestone with its browser as Chrome has topped 25% market share for the first time over the past weekend. According to StatCounter, Chrome reached 25.02 percent last Sunday. Since Chrome's market share is higher on weekends than during the week, it is unlikely that it will be averaging 25 percent for the entire month. However, the market share for first 12 days of September is 23.72 percent, up from 23.16 percent in August, which indicates that Chrome could surpass 24 percent this month.
