HP to contribute webOS to the open source community

The long silence regarding webOS has been broken but in a different way than what most people expected. Instead of shutting down the project once and for all, HP has announced that they will be contributing webOS to the open source community. This means that HP will make the underlying source code of the OS available to developers under an open source license. You can take it, customize it and use it for free as long as you give back to the open source community. This is similar to the way Linux and Android operate.

Even though the company said quite some time ago that it was killing off it webOS hardware efforts, HP CEO Meg Whitman said in an interview with The Verge on Friday that HP plans to create new webOS-based devices in the future. “The answer to that is yes but what I can't tell you is whether that will be in 2012 or not,” Whitman said when asked about the potential for new hardware.

Federal domain seizure raises new concerns over online censorship

Acting within their rights, Dajaz1's owners filed a request for return, and were reportedly told that the forfeiture process would soon get underway. When the 90-day deadline came and went without any movement, the site's lawyer, Andrew B. Bridges, reached out to the government for explanation. In response, the feds said they had received an extension from the court, but refused to provide evidence of this extension, claiming that the court order and motion papers were filed under seal. The documents, they replied, could not be disclosed, even in redacted form.

Is Verizon's Galaxy Nexus Domain Weirdness a Sign of Things to Come or Just an Error?

So a few of our readers have noticed something very odd. The URL vzw.com/galaxynexus used to redirect to the sign-up page where you’d request more information via email when the device becomes available. Today, the URL points to shop.verizonwireless.com with a page ID of “Samsung Nexus”. Unfortunately, that page is about as blank as the expression on a customer service rep’s face when asked about the device’s true launch date.

TomTom looks to shed ten-percent of workforce in restructuring effort

We have some sad news to report out of Holland today. TomTom has announced that it will release nearly ten-percent of its employees as the company works to reorganize and move away from the personal navigation device market. The struggling firm previously stated that it would trim €50 million from its annual operations budget, and many of TomTom's employees will now face the ramifications of this effort. Moving forward, the company will focus primarily on in-dash navigation equipment that's pre-installed by automotive manufacturers, along with fleet management for delivery companies.

Samsung To Unveil 11.6-inch Tablet With 25601600 Resolution Early Next Year [Rumor]

BGR is reporting that one of their “trusted” sources has revealed to them an Android tablet of mythological proportions that will be most likely be unveiled at Mobile World Congress in February. This unicorn device will feature an 11.6-inch — ready for this. — 2560×1600 resolution display (that's higher than 1080p) and feature a 16:10 aspect ratio. If 11.6-inches sounds way too big, the source mentioned that only the bezel would be shrinking for the most part, with the device size remaining largely the same as current 10.1-inch tablets.

And if the intruder has a floating head and knife, you'll know for sure.

The CM9 customization for Android 4.0 has only been in the works since mid-November and already its canny creators claim to have it running on a number of devices. They say they're making the quickest progress with OMAP4, MSM8660x7×30 and Exynos-based handsets, so if you own of those you should find yourself at the top of the queue. Despite difficulties with totally new camera and graphics drivers in ICS, there should eventually be support for all CM7-compatible models going back to phones like the Nexus One, as well as the Tegra 2-powered Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Asus Transformer.

Griffin GuitarConnect Pro Pipes Digital Signal to iPad

Griffin GuitarConnect Pro Pipes Digital Signal to iPad

Griffin's guitar adapter feeds a digital signal into your iPhone or iPad. Running an analog signal from your guitar to your iPad is fine, but the crackles and pops that come along with it aren't. Griffin's new GuitarConnect Pro fixes this by putting an analog to digital converter into the widget, and piping the result direct into the dock connector.
Thus, you can feed your guitar straight into any Core Audio app, from virtual guitar pedals to Apple's own opus, GarageBand.

The little gadget has a standard quarter-inch jack socket for the guitar cable, and a short output cable with the familiar 30-pin plug on the end.

Well, it seems like RIM has kept to its word and true enough - the hole which dingleberry uses to gain root access has been closed by the latest update that has been issued to the PlayBook. It looks like the short-lived root method will have to find another way now to gain super user permissions on the QNX tablet.
However, it's been reported that you can always downgrade to an older version of the PlayBook OS to root it, or just not update the tablet to keep root.

We all know that there is this thing called run-flat tyres, where they are a standard issue feature on expensive vehicles such as BMWs, but replacing them can be quite a pain on your wallet. Then again, it should not matter – after all, if you are rich enough to afford such a pricey marque, what is a little bit more money when it comes to its maintenance. Bridgestone's latest Air-Free concept is a new kind of tyre technology what will rely on a thermoplastic resin that will replace air as it's support structure. It makes sense then, that without any air in such tyres, punctures will end up being a thing of the past.
