BASF, Philips create solar-powered OLED sunroof concept

As part of a project involving a new concept Smart vehicle, chemical company giant BASF teamed up with Philips to create an interesting vehicle interior lighting concept using a transparent roof. They may just look like hexagonal pieces of glass, but this car's roof is filled with OLED lights and solar cells. In the day time the OLED sun roof is transparent, letting you see outside the vehicle while collecting solar energy to power its interior lighting system at night.

LG Optimus Net with NFC headed to Sprint and Virgin Mobile as the Optimus Elite

LG Optimus Net with NFC headed to Sprint and Virgin Mobile as the Optimus Elite

The NFC-enabled version of the LG Optimus Net is apparently on its way to the US, expected to land at both Sprint and Virgin Mobile quite soon. It will be sold at those two carriers as the LG Optimus Elite. That name is a bit funny, since the phone is anything but high-end. Or elite.
The original Optimus Net was announced in July 2011, so it's not even a particularly new smartphone. Sometimes though, for unknown reasons, some handsets take many months to reach the US (case in point: Samsung Galaxy S II).

New Intel Ivy Bridge i5 details leaked in Intel sales book

Word on the street is Ivy Bridge has been delayed, but that doesn't mean you have to wait till June to get the low down on some of the shiny new silicon Intel has in store for you. Chipzilla posted a sales book, presumably on accident since it's been pulled, with details about upcoming i5 and i7 refreshes. The only page we were able to find was loaded with Core i5s, including third generation parts like the 3.4GHz 3570K which packs the new HD4000 and, most likely, an unlocked multiplier.

CNN reveals Toyota memo that purports to show sudden acceleration caused by electronics

CNN revealed a confidential memo written in Japanese on the Anderson Cooper 360 show last night that it contends shows Toyota engineers found an electrical problem that caused sudden unintended acceleration in a pre-production test vehicle. The news organization commissioned three separate translations of the documents, though Toyota has objected to the accuracy of each. Findings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and National Research Council have both supported Toyota's original explanation of sudden unintended acceleration being caused by either sticky gas pedals, trapped floor mats or human error.

Google puts ITA acquisition to use again with new airline reservation system for Cape Air

It may be starting out fairly small, but Google has just made its first push into the airline reservation business. That comes courtesy of its 2010 acquisition of ITA Software, which has already resulted in the Flight Search service and OnTheFly app, and has now also produced a new reservation system for Massachusetts-based Cape Air.

Android and iOS expose your photos to third party apps, promise fixes

2012 is still young, yet it's already shaping up to be a bad year for privacy and security on the mobile front. Apple found itself embroiled in a bit of a brouhaha over the iPhone address book and an app called Path. And, of course, Google was put under the microscope when mobile Safari was found to have a security flaw that its mobile ads were exploiting. Then, earlier this week, it was discovered that granting iOS apps access to your location could also expose your photos. Now it's been discovered that Android also exposes your images, though, it's doing so without asking for any permissions at all.

Netflix deal with Starz ends

It was announced a few months ago that Netflix's deal with Starz would be ending in February, and now that March has begun, it looks like it's finally happened. Netflix users won't have access to 17 Starz-run channels such as Encore as well as movies from Disney and Sony such as Scarface, Toy Story 3, Beetlejuice, Gangs of New York and more. Netflix had reportedly offered Starz $300 million to extend the deal, but the content provider chose to reject it, believing that its content was worth much more than that.

Unofficial VLC Beta for Android released

Unofficial VLC Beta for Android released

The popular video player, VLC, made its brief debut on iOS but was then pulled by the developer over disagreements with Apple's iTunes App Store policies. We're sure that many Android owners are probably looking forward to seeing it arrive on Android, but a quick trip over to VLC's page has revealed that development of the app for Android is still in development despite its private beta being kicked off last year. Fret not, however, as an Android developer over in the XDA forums, adridu59, has taken it upon himself to compile VLC for use on Android devices.

Earlier Tuesday morning, AGB claimed that Doom 4 was canceled while also sporting eighteen screenshots from the supposed nuked game. Since then, Bethesda has squashed the rumor, assuring fans that the fourth Doom installment is still in progress. But what Bethesda didn't do was confirm or deny the Doom 4 screenshots. The last really big news we've heard about Doom 4 was during QuakeCon 2011.

Cadillac choreographs light show for approaching its 2013 XTS

Cadillac has already been releasing a steady drip of information about what's going into its 2013 XTS like its autonomous-vehicle tech, and now it's focusing on lighting choreography. Cadillac reminds us that its lighting signature is vertical bands of illumination, tying it back to 1948, when the tailfins for which the brand is still known were first used on cars like the Fleetwood Sixty Special and Series 61 Coupe. The illumination system goes by the intriguing names of either "Lead Me to the Vehicle" or the Phil-Collins-esque "Take Me Home" and is charged with adding drama and security.

Sure, the FCC didn't get to tear apart the delectable white Lumia 900 we're oh-so-smitten with, but given the cadaver activities undertaken upon a smartphone that hasn't yet gone on sale, beggars can't be choosers. Inside the filing you'll find a full manual and a bevy of internal shots revealing what makes Nokia's flagship Windows Phone tick. Also of note, is a snap revealing the exact locations of its various antennae, which we've conveniently culled for you after the break.

Sony's 2012 Xperia series gets together for awkward family portrait

While Sony's newly-christened Xperia phones are a bit difficult to tell apart, there's nothing quite like getting the whole clan together to tell these statement slabs apart. It's largely about the size and build differences here - while the 4.3-inch Xperia S readies itself for retail stores very soon, the middleweight Xperia P is showing off its aluminum unibody frame. The Xperia U then shyly rounds out the series with the smallest footprint of the bunch.

IBM: We're on the cusp of the Quantum Computing revolution

IBM: We're on the cusp of the Quantum Computing revolution

Technology's holy grail is the development of a “perfect” Quantum Computer. Traditional computers recognize information as bits: binary information representing “On” or “Off” states. A quantum computer uses qubits: operating in superposition, a qubit exists in all states simultaneously — not just “On” or “Off,” but every possible state in-between. It would theoretically be able to instantly access every piece of information at the same time, meaning that a 250 qubit computer would contain more data than there are particles in the universe.

T-Mobile Kills Plans For 84Mbps HSPA+ Network – Will Jump Straight To LTE In 2013

T-Mobile USA Senior Vice President Andrew Sherrad in an interview with The Verge, that the carrier would be skipping their original plans to introduce an even faster 84Mbps network, in favor of moving straight to an LTE based one. The move is for a few reasons. For one, T-Mobile wants to continue emphasizing their WiFi calling feature and currently, their UMA based service can't support when a customer is on a WiFi call, and leaves their wireless network — the call will drop. But once T-Mobile gets on board the LTE train, this will no longer be a problem with the new network transitioning seamlessly between the two.

The Panasonic Eluga smartphone has been teased by the Japanese company for about two months now. It finally received that name earlier this month, and now it looks set to take the world by storm (or at least Europe). We got hold of the Eluga at Panasonic's booth at Mobile World Congress and a photo shoot ensued, as you'd imagine. The Eluga has a nice design, blocky on the front (a la Sony's new Xperias), but the way the back side is constructed means that the phone feels incredibly slim and doesn't appear to be bulky at all (unlike Sony's designs).
