Comcast's Internet Essentials offers $10 internet access to low-income families

Originally laid out as the Comcast Broadband Opportunity Program, the plan offers internet access for only $10 a month to families with children who qualify for free lunch programs. Taking its commitment even further, the outfit is offering a $150 voucher for the purchase of a computer, access to free digital literacy training, and a Norton Security Suite.

Microsoft offers 'mad loot' Bluehat prize to entice security developers (video)

Mere numbers aren't enough to describe cash prizes for Microsoft, it seems. The firm's inaugural Bluehat security competition's introduction video opted for a clearer term: "mad loot, lots of it." The big M hopes the hefty first prize of $200,000 will inspire the creation of the next generation of defensive computer security technology. The most innovative "novel runtime mitigation technology designed to prevent the exploitation of memory safety vulnerabilities" (phew!) will take home the aforesaid mad loot, while second and third places will receive $50,000 and an MSDN Universal subscription, respectively.

While the actor suffered no worse than a shoulder injury, the F1 restyled itself thanks to a lamp post subsequent fire. Feltone window blinds will help soundproof your house

Due to the cost of property and the economy, some people end up staying in places that while not ideal, are within their budget. Such non-ideal locations include staying near the airport or by the highway which is not only incredibly dusty and the roar of plane and car engines can get on your nerves. Tokyo Blinds, a company from Japan, has come up with a set of window blinds called Feltone. As the name implies, these blinds are made out of felt and the company claims that this would help to absorb sound waves and even converting them to thermal energy through repeated reflection. It is said to be able to reduce sound levels at 89dB by 4dB.

Fingerprints can reveal more than just your identity

If you thought leaving your fingerprints behind at the scene of a crime was a bad idea - you're right, and it's about to get worse. Some researchers at the Sheffield Hallam University have developed a way to capture fingerprints that can identify substances touched and secretions from a person's body. With this information, investigators can find out more about a suspect's actions and habits. This is especially useful for first time criminals who won't have any prints to match in the police database - their actions and habits can involuntarily give them away to the authorities.

Is Facebook thinking about injecting ads directly into your news feed?

Is Facebook thinking about injecting ads directly into your news feed?

Ads on websites when appropriately placed and when relevant are ideal. In fact relevant and well-placed ads makes me want to click them to find out more. But when you encounter websites that supposedly show ads that are "relevant" or are littered with huge banners and pop-ups, the first thing you want to do is click the huge "X" to close it. While Facebook started off being resistant to the idea of ads on its website, it looks like they may be changing their tune pretty soon.

How much success is Microsoft having with Windows Phone. It's hard to tell, since Microsoft has been pretty much quiet about the whole situation when it comes to dishing out the sales figures. However, the folks over at Seattle Pi dug up stats and figures that Microsoft has given here and there, added a dash of estimation and managed to calculate a figure. According to them, Microsoft's Windows Phone revenue for the fiscal year 2011 is at the very most: $613 million.
While it's not exactly a small figure, when compared to the iPhone, which made $13.3 billion for Apple just in the most recent quarter alone - it becomes… peanuts.
