Is Boxee Giving Away Free Boxee TVs?

Is Boxee Giving Away Free Boxee TVs?

Here's a reason to give your email to those “coming soon” or “beta” webpages: it looks like if you were so excited about Boxee's upcoming Boxee TV that you gave them your email, and you live in a major market area, you could be receiving a free Boxee TV before they even come out. The Verge is reporting that Boxee is sending out emails promising a free Boxee TV in exchange for filling out a survey. These surveys seem to only be going out to people who signed up before today, and only in the areas where Boxee is rolling out its Cloud DVR service. That means Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, DC.

DARPA's Pet-Proto robot climbs, balances, jumps, comes to get you

While Boston Dynamics' Cheetah has already premiered, speeding along on its robot-friendly treadmill, we've now got a better glimpse at how the similarly DARPA-funded human-hunting obstacle-scaling Atlas fares, courtesy of its ancestor. That's the Pet-Proto you can see in the video below, balancing and leaping across narrow terrain, conducting its own "autonomous decision-making" and keeping upright - all very important points for DARPA's own Robotics Challenge, a competition where winners will gain access to their very own modified version of the Atlas for future disaster response tests.

Scientists Have Changed The Color of Gold

Scientists Have Changed The Color of Gold

The pattern embossed on the gold's surface. Anodizing's in the tech news world today because Apple (and other gadget makers) are realizing it's a great way to make portable devices more durable and more attractive. However, the anodizing process involves coating metal with a thin layer of colored aluminum oxide: basically, it's not changing the actual color of the metal. Researchers from the university of Southhampton in the UK announced today that they actually changed the color of gold by scuffing up its surface.

Dutch court rules that Samsung didn't infringe on Apple multi-touch patent

Once again, a decision has been made on an Apple versus Samsung patent dispute. This time, it's a Dutch court in the Hague, ruling that Samsung does not infringe on a Cupertino patent relating to certain multi-touch commands that the Korean firm implements in some of its Galaxy phones and tablets. This isn't the first time that the Netherlands-based court has found in favor of Samsung, and Apple had already lost a preliminary injunction on this same patent last year.

Nissan works on skin-like car upholstery

Nissan works on skin-like car upholstery

When it comes to the kind of upholstery in your vehicle, most folks would figure out that leather is the epitome of luxury. After all, it provides that nice, warm and soft feeling as you sink your entire body right into it after a long day at the office. Those who are not that well off, or if the vehicle is of a lower grade, regular cloth seats will have to do. Nissan, however, have tasked their engineers to develop something which might just sound creepy – to create synthetic materials which replicate the feel and touch of a human finger.

Julie's Gadget Diary – I think I'm having a mid-life tech crisis

I think I'm starting to sound like the grumpy old gadget woman lately, but today's Apple iPad mini event did not excite me any more than last month's iPhone 5 announcement. If you recall, I decided NOT to buy an iPhone 5. I dumped my iPhone 4S and defected over to camp Android with a shiny new Samsung Galaxy S3. After more than a month with this new phone, I can honestly say that I haven't missed the iPhone at all.

The most exciting Xbox SmartGlass application isn't what you'd think

The most exciting Xbox SmartGlass application isn't what you'd think

In Microsoft's ongoing battle to alter your association between "Xbox" and "Video Games," SmartGlass is its latest volley. Employing your favorite mobile device - Windows Phone 7.5x8, Android, and iOS devices are all supported - SmartGlass enables you to control your Dashboard experience, explore the web, input text, and much more. But what Microsoft's really banking on is its "second screen" functionality, essentially enabling another layer of interactivity with video, music, games, and the Xbox 360's other, less ballyhooed service: sports. It's this final layer that I found most enticing during a recent hands-on meeting with Microsoft.

Samsung Galaxy S III is the first MetroPCS handset to support Google Wallet

Samsung Galaxy S III is the first MetroPCS handset to support Google Wallet

While the US wireless industry seems far away from finding a universal mobile payment system, T-Mobile's new BFF MetroPCS appears to have made its choice. Taking to its official Facebook page, the carrier announced on Monday that the Samsung Galaxy S III is its first handset to support Google Wallet. In choosing Google's mobile payment platform, MetroPCS joins two of its biggest competitors, Sprint and US Cellular. It should be noted that T-Mobile is deeply committed to Google's wireless payment competitor Isis, which recently became ready for public consumption.

Pre-orders for Microsoft Surface with Windows RT start shipping

Pre-orders for Microsoft Surface with Windows RT start shipping

If you're one of the many people who pre-ordered Microsoft's Surface with Windows RT, you could be getting your tablet just in time for its official October 26th ship date - and perhaps even before then. According to a few reader tips and a confirmation email sent to WP Central, those tablets are indeed in the shipping stages and could arrive as early as next week depending on your selected delivery method. While there have been reports of delays in UK and Canada, those were apparently incorrect, and we have no reason to believe the US shipments won't be on time.

Except for blind people, who miss out on several of the aspects of smartphones and touchscreens that make them so cool. Motorola's Wearable Computer Beats Google Glass to Market

Motorola's Wearable Computer Beats Google Glass to Market

Google Glass, the Brin-approved, fashionable (or not) wearable computer still isn't available to consumers, and it may be another year. If you're itching to put a tiny screen in front of your retina, you should take a look at Motorola Solutions' HC1 head-mounted computer. The HC1, which runs Windows CE and is powered by a TI OMAP 3 microprocessor, is practically a bargain at a $4000 asking price. . The HC1 is intended for industrial and military purposes, so that you can keep schematics or blueprints handy but still keep your arms free.

Seagate Backup Plus brings USB 3.0 speed, sociability to new Macbooks

When Seagate launched its PC/Mac Backup Plus offering that could safeguard not only your folders but your Facebook or Twitter content, too, it seemed like a nice idea. But conspicuously missing from the Mac side of that equation was a USB 3.0 port to hustle transfers along at a much less pedestrian 5 Gbps - likely because until recently, no Macs directly supported it.

Sony C650X Odin spotted on candid camera?

Sony C650X Odin spotted on candid camera?

We did talk about the Sony C650X Odin's alleged specifications more than a week ago, but had absolutely no inkling of an idea as to just how the smartphone would look like. Well, it does seem as though additional light has been shed into the darkness of rumors, and here we are with what could very well be the first leaked image of the Sony C650X Odin in the flesh. The Sony C650X Odin is touted to be Sony Mobile's upcoming flagship device, where it will be positioned to fight for the Android-powered phablet market share among other rivals such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, LG Intuition and HTC DLX.
