The calls won't use your mobile minutes or require any purchase. It's completely free. I just tried it myself and it worked great. You can sign up for your own free magicJack phone number through the app, or you can just make a free call either by keying in the number or using the contacts already on your phone. The caller id on the receiving side of the call shows up as an area code 202 number.
