Early estimates say new iPad cuts Apple's profit margins

These estimates are always to be taken with a grain of salt but, if UBM TechInsights is to be believed, Apple is cutting into its precious profit margins to keep the price of the iPad flat. According to the research firm, the total cost of components in the 16GB 4G model is around $310 — not including assembly and shipping. With a final price of $629, Cupertino is pulling in about a 51 percent profit, a sizable drop from the estimated 56 percent profit margin on the similarly specced iPad 2 at launch.

Last week, Apple received a favorable outcome when the ITC issued its claim construction order, siding with Apple's interpretations of two patents - for those who aren't familiar, claim construction is the process by which the judge determines the meaning of specific terms in the claims, and it often has great influence on findings of infringement (or non-infringement).

At this point, it'd be more of a shock if Apple wasn't working on a streaming media service. Still, we're surprised to hear that Steve Jobs was personally involved in trying to corral support from the entertainment industry. CBS CEO Leslie Moonves revealed during a talk at the UCLA Entertainment Symposium that he has spoken with the Apple founder directly about providing content to subscription-based video service, but declined the invitation. Moonves was concerned about how signing on to such a service would impact existing revenue streams, including those from competing properties like Hulu.

While more time was spent talking about their Bluetooth music dongle at Mobile World Congress, HTC also has a new HD streaming box in the pipeline to go along with the upcoming One series. We already saw the Media Link HD up for pre-order at Clove and now we have an FCC filing to go along with it. What we can garner from the associated paperwork is that the Media Link will do 1080p display mirroring over 802.11 b/g/n to HDMI-equipped TV sets. Games, videos, photos, and music will all be accessible on the larger screen.
Pre-order pricing has suggested the Media Link HD will sell for around $120.
